Is it a bug that a mech can core me in the back with ac5s without me even realizing he's firing at me? It's ******* annoying.

There's this big, red, flashing indicator on the bottom of your HUD that pops up whenever someone starts shooting at you from the rear.
You'll also find that it pops up whenever someone shoots at you from anywhere else.
It's a rather important tool.

I am annoyed too. PGI seems to knee jerk impulse, like everything else. Isn't there a setting between teeth jarring, nausea inducing shake and nothing?

It's kinda hard to focus when you're fighting 2 mechs and getting half a dozen more alerts.
They should let us color code alerts.
