Guided weapons have problems now given ECM. So rather than nerf ECM into the ground, we can actually address the underlying issues behind guided weapons.

:LRM:

Give them 3 modes of fire.
  • Mode 1: Direct fire. Missiles dont launch in one big cloud, but instead ripple launch in a long stream. Stream follows your aiming reticule. Think a long stream of missiles guided like the rocket launcher from Half Life. Can only guide 1 stream at a time per launcher. Missiles fly faster than current missiles but in this mode they are manualy guided to target.
  • Mode 2: Medium Arc. Slight reduction in range, requires lockon to fire and track. Arc is the same as it is now. Flight time is the same as it is now.
  • Mode 3: High Angle. VERY SEVERE reduction in range. Requires lockon to fire and track. Has VERY high arc. Missiles fly slowly up and fast down w/ overall increase in flight time compared to current. Suceptable to AMS fire more than normal.

2x LRM20 on 'direct fire' from 180m out to 1000m? f*** yeah

(sounds like the MRM mechanics from MWLL actually, once fired they follow your reticule wherever you point)

The balanced thing is, you actually have to keep guiding them yourself. And you can only have as many volleys in air as you have launchers, unlike now where you can have 4-5 launches in air.

This is a wonderful idea.

I like the ECM implementation, I think it really adds something to the game, but attempting to fight in the 2x LRM20 cat is a no-go ATM. I think adding in a direct fire mode (single or multiple rock) would go a long way towards addressing the balance issues.

Use TAG and/or a scout w/ TAG

how about allowing missiles to lock onto a tag mid flight? You could blind fire them from cover, and your scout tags - but doesn't have to hold the tag for the entire flight time (kind of how laser guided missiles work today...).

ECM still trumps massed missile boats operating without a scout to actively spot for them.

The scout doesn't have to stand stock still like a statue to hold a lock, with a constant red "over here!" line for the enemy to follow - rather they just keep "tapping" the target to keep the missiles in flight.

Target is still able to break missile lock by manoeuvring, just not quite as easily...
