Atlas head shot can only be done from the front right on the face. The back of the head counts as torso incase you are one of those shooting from behind and wondering why the torso goes red. It is that well armored and protected. Also, its cockpit hit is only on the left eye and not anywhere else on the head.

Except that its not... I did this test standing still from about 200 meters in Zoom.. No damage to head from either eye.

Atlas head used to be the whole head assembly, but they died faster than any other mech. Like the Awesome, Catapult, and Cataphract, the Atlas head hit box got fixed. It's now the left eye, and it is still vulnerable, but you have to aim a lot more carefully. Seems fitting for the premier IS assault mech, no?

The left eye is not "vulnerable", please learn to read...or perhaps comprehend.... I did a very careful test of it with 33 ping.

Being below and to the Atlases slight left of front I have gotten head shots by shooting towards the upper inside of their left eye. Have even had some instagibs on other Atlases with my old RS 4 LL build.

When they power down and slump forward a bit it seems harder because if your shots hit the brow area it's a CT hit. Have to get shots inside the eye socket.

This sounds more reasonable...

HOWEVER...

In NO WAY is that balanced or fair to the other mech chassis. I was here for all of the CBT, i remember when the Atlas fix went in.... Its time to revert some of it. Shortly there will be another Assault in the game and the Atlas should not have a near invulnerable head box.

If your shots hit the brow or cheek area at all it will be a CT hit.

To repeat, to get a headshot on an Atlas requires your shots to be coming from slightly below and to the target's left, and aiming slightly towards the inside upper corner of the target's left eye. 200m is probably not close enough to do it reliably either.

I think a small and hard to hit head box on any mech that has a max speed below 60 before speed tweak with the biggest engine in it makes sense.

i think the top/back of the "head" should be vulnerable as well...you know, the part that the mask doesn't cover.

That's the rear center torso.

I look at it this way: if we compare the Atlas to the soon-to-be-introduced Stalker, it has a very limited set of hardpoints. Hell, the Cataphract has it licked for hardpoints. So, to keep it in line with them, it has the toughest cockpit in the game. Just like how the Awesome has a fairly big one to keep 7mpls brawlers from overtaking the premium brawler, the Atlas. I think it's ok.

Same. I fired 3 triple LL alphas into the left eye (cockpit) of a shutdown atlas and each one registered to CT.

I wasn't shut down: I was just verrrry slow.

I've actually headshot an Atlas from behind. Once. Pure luck, wasn't even really aiming for a headshot. Aimed for the center of the shoulders and he dropped off a small rise and both AC/20s hit the "sweet spot." Boom, dead-Atlas.

I headshot one last night on frozen city. He came over the hill to peak with his atlas and I lined up on his head with my AC20 and let one rip. Pop, he tipped over backwards and no more atlas.

When was the last time you got a head kill shot on an atlas?

Yesterday.

If some dude decides to plant his feet down 50m in front of me because he can't aim on the move, I'm going to click on his eye and blow out his jumpseat.

Of all the places to target, why target the head? Seems like a waste of time.

Depends on the situation and mech. Wouldn't normally try it on an Atlas unless I was hurt bad and needed the low probability kill right now if I can get it.

THE HEAD DOES NOT EQUAL JUST THE COCKPIT!!!

There, I've said it AGAIN for everyone to see.

The head on EVERY battlemech consists of the cockpit, sensors x2, life support x2, and one empty critical space.

The head on EVERY 'mech has the same size internals.

The head box hit location on the Atlas in this game is INCORRECT.

Those are the facts. Deal with them.

-Irish

Gameplay is more important than realism. Being able to headshot every atlas with little effort isn't good for gameplay.

I had another post proving it, via shooting a shut down one in both eyes with large lasers...and still getting damage registered on CT.

Fix pls. Hard to kill should not = invulnerable.

My friend killed me via headshot messing around while we were capping...

Do you remember when they could be popped with ease?

By your post count you should.

Who cares if Atlas head is harder to hit. If you're wasting your time trying to head an Atlas, you're probably gonna die anyways.

Call it unfair, but these beasts need to be beasts.

We don't need our assaults being one shot in the face with small laser boating tard monkeys.

They happen, but it shouldn't be relied on to down Atlas or other Assaults.

It is possible to hit the Atlas Eye. The issue is rather the following:

1. Its small, ok , probably not smaller than on other mechs.
2. this is the important one. Its HIGH up. So if you fire from below you are likely to hit the edge. The cockpit glass looks a bit recessed. Unless your are on a favorable level with the eye to get a good firing angle on the glass is very hard to hit.

my 5 cents.

I'm also in the belief you almost need to smack it head on with very little angle effecting your shot. Probably why you see other assaults heading other assaults and not so many other mechs downing them that way.

That's just the point. The Awesome is supposed to be one of the premier 'mechs in the BattleTech universe. An Awesome at range for its PPCs should be every bit as dangerous as an Atlas is at medium and close ranges. Simple solution... Make the head hitbox a standard size on all 'mechs, with keeps things in line with canon. Take the smallest 'mech and establish the size of its head hitbox Use that same size head hitbox for all 'mechs. The Atlas' hitbox would be a bit larger, but not so large as to be a huge target as long as the Atlas keeps moving (which is only common sense). Other 'mechs such as the Catapult and Awesome wouldn't be just walking headshot targets anymore. Seems rather simple, doesn't it? Bet it would work, too. -Irish

Not really. You know, the mechs have different sizes in MWO. Hitting an Atlas is a lot easier than hitting a commando, even if you don't take into account the speed, the Atlas is a lot bigger, so it's very easy to hit it. In TT, all mechs were equally hard to hit, only the speed counted. Also, all the sections had the same chance of getting hit, independent of the mech. If you know equalize the head hitbox, you should also equalize all the other hitboxes. Doesn't sound so good now, does it?. Now, it the cockpit of the Atlas is just the left eye, it's fine, if you miss, you're hitting the huge CT anyway.

And they should be near invulnerable. Killing a 100 ton mech with 36 damage should not be common. There would be absolutely no reason whatsoever to pilot an Atlas if they could be headshotted easily.

Learn to aim with a better weapon. Depending on your range, and the position of your weapons, you're not going to pinpoint that shot. (Zoom in on the eye)

I "head shot" an Atlas with two Gauss Rifles, and it died. Not invulnerable. (IN THE EYE!)
