Since the introduction of ECM, PuG members who want the protection of ECM have to either own a mech with it or hang close to a mech that has it installed. Basically, I haven't see puggies race apart in every direction once the match starts. Just hanging close to a friendly ECM mech allows them to work together, and sometimes they protect the mech with it installed.
Essentially, the ECM as it is forces people in PuGs to work together. This is a good thing, but it comes at the cost of LRMs being very limited. The ECM will probably be nerfed a bit and screw this up, but for now the asinine pre-build matching-nerf is effectively unnecessary.
