I may be wrong here, and I really want to have someone prove me wrong, but why would you take an ECM commando over a Raven. On the same note, why would take an Awesome when I can take an Atlas. I just don't see it being capable of doing a role that couldn't be filled by another mech. Either heavier Lasers/PPCs on an Atlas, or Lighter/Faster PPCs on an a K2/ Cataphract. I'm not wanting to complain. I just want someone to give me an idea beyond aesthetics or or love of a certain mech regardless of viablity. What could be done to make them more useful? Will we only see them used when the ELO system is added in?

Sometimes a players comfort level with a chasis outweighs any percieved flaws. We have folks in the unit that will swear by both chasis, and having seen them run both, I wouldn't pull them out of one.

I probably will stop playing my ECM Commando once I can actually afford a good engine for my Raven. It had a glorious first day of ECM being out, but now that people aren't being total noobs about it, it's just back to being second-rate.

When we where doing 8 mans yesterday. I was using my Awesome 8R.
Why? My awesome 8R has 4x SRM6. That can punch holes through any atlas. The max an atlas can hold is 3 and the location is decent at best. 8R missle slots are on both sides of its chest, making it easy to hit the CT of most mechs and the missles are really closed together when they're fired. Also, its cheaper to run. I can afford to actually run far FAR longer then any atlas.
Also, you have to keep in mind that not everyone has an atlas or even likes the atlas. Like someone else said, its better to keep the player in a mech he knows how to play and is good at it then stick him in a mech he doesn't like and have no idea how to use it.

80 tons is the most efficient assault chassis vs engine rating weights. Every tonnage past that requires a disproportionately huge engine for rather small outputs. Look at the Atlas: a 360 engine only takes it to 56(?) km/h.
Awesomes are excellent platforms for moving fast because of this. Put some SRMs on them or run with medium pulse lasers and you can pull off some nasty stuff.

I see more commandos kicking butt than ravens. Ravens are easy to kill, the commando can be a much harder target IMO.

What breaks the Awesome in MWO is the heat and how it's handled. I know. I know , it's how the DEVs want it. But they are ruining the basic use of many Mechs. The Awesome as designed has long range punch that the stock Atlas does not have. The fact that it is being used as a missile platform as it is, is kinda sad.
Commandos... I got nothing. Some folks can use it, Me Its to small. to slow, and under gunned. For Me.

I STRONGLY disagree. My most used mech is the awesome. I use 3 variants. The 9m, the 8q and the 8r. In the 9M I go 84 kph and carry a lot of weapons (70 alpha) And have max armor. I can kill almost any mech pretty easily even in 8 v 8 and go so fast I can act as a semi-scout. It is so good I tend to get bored of how well it does.
In my 8Q I carry 3-4 PPCs (3 is more dps, 4 is just more fun to alpha with) and that is a lot of fun. The atlas can only carry 2 at once (except the RS, but it wouldnt have much more room and would be a bigger target) This does really well.
The 8R was a lot better before ECM, 2 artemis LRM15s and 1 LL and it did pretty darn well.
The awesome is oven overlooked when an atlas is also in view but I will kill you because of that.
The commando is just fun and tiny and great at hiding. I often power down, let them run by, power back up and start another cap.

I can't see any reason to use a Commando over a Raven, I'll grant you. I guess a Commando lets you get ECM on a faster chassis, while (unlike the Cicada) still having Streaks? Doesn't seem worth it.
Generally I think Awesomes are better than Atlases, and when I run an Awesome I specifically go Atlas hunting. The Awesome's extra maneuverability is worth more than 20 extra tons if you use it well, e.g. typically giving you the first volley against an Atlas, or snipe in and out of cover in a way that an Atlas just can't. An Awesome has some agency over it's fate, where a stodgy Atlas is largely stuck with the situation it's given.
This changes somewhat now with the ECM Atlas model though. That's a strong edge!

Awesomes can mount x4 LRM 15s......that hurts a lot. Just through on TAG and a few medium lasers as back-up.
