I was looking forward to messing around with the whole painting deal/thing.
I watched a video on you tube showing how it's done. Looked kinda neat.
When I try to paint my HBK-4J, the 3 channel boxes are grey with a darker grey slash through them. I know some have painted their mechs, I've seen them on the battlefield and they look cool.
I do realize that the paint job is superficial and does not affect gameplay, but I'm finding it disappointing that I can't use it.
So what gives with the HBK-4J? Red haired stepchild or something?

The Commando, Hunchback, Awesome, and uh... something else are not paintable until the 18th. They announced this like twice when they were releasing paints. It's because those Mechs still need some of their textures converted over to the new system.

The Dragon is the other one. It seems like it should be trivial to do, but I'm not a programmer and apparently it isn't.

Because they each have a unique model they require individual attention to ensure the skin appears correctly, not covering the canopy etc.
Since they are added and approved individually this means they arrive in batches as they become available for use, eventually, all mechs will have access to all the standard paint scheme options. Not sure on Founders mechs or premium mechs though.

Thanks for the answers guys.
Strange that the Hunchback is not paintable and other newer mechs are.
Oh well. We'll see what happens on the 18th.

The original eight 'Mechs are being retro-fitted to the new system and any new 'Mech takes presidence over the existing ones.
This is done to keep the delivery of the new 'Mechs on schedule. By the end of the year, all 'Mechs will be converted and able to change the camo spec, aside from for 'hero Mechs' and 'Founders'.

If you have the PG Gamer skin, that can be repainted. Although you are stuck with the pattern. Further more, in the paint area there is a category for PC Gamer that has three colours: grey, red and black. They are free to use on any pattern available, including the PC Gamer one itself. I've redone the colour layout on my Hunchback. Doing this also appears to update the textures for that pattern, so it looks really awesome.
If you need a hookup let me know, I'll toss the info.

Which kinda...sucks. But, meh. All things considered, there are much larger fish to fry.

I was willing to pay MC to changed the colors on my founder and hero mechs. Too bad.
