I'm still unsure of how hitting with lasers work. They fire and have a long animation. If I sweep over the target does that count as a hit? Is it only where the laser first hits that counts? If I hold the laser on target does that increase damage?

lazers? How does dey wokrz?

damage done over time, so if you sweep across a target, you'll do little damage to all areas of the enemy.
if fire is focused in one area all the damage goes to that area.

Example:

Medium Laz0r <_<

Beam duration: 1 sec.
Damage: 5

Focus on the CT for the whole duration and you deal 5 damage to the CT.

Sweep over CT and RT for each 0.5 seconds and you will deal to each part 2.5 damage. Well probably you will deal 3 and 2 damage, I don't know if the devs calculate damage with floating points, but you get the general idea

People are also not mentioning that on some of the faster mechs you have to lead out with lasers ,because of the lag.

Also, when you are facing fast light mechs, take into account their ping.. if 50 ms, aim for the leading center of their middle torso, if 100ms try a little on the leading edge of the middle torso, and if 150+ try aiming just a hair in front of their leading edge... helps account for lag! :)

Think of laser damage like a flame. If you run your hand quickly over a candle, it won't hurt a bit or leave any kind of mark. Leave your palm on it for a second or more? You're looking at a nasty burn.

Always try and control your fire and keep the lasers pointed at a single spot on a mech. Adjusting your mouse sensitivity to be less jumpy can help with this tremendously.
