Is there anything that I can pre-build a mech in or on that will show me the stats and info before I go and buy all the equipment? I tried to look but don't even know where to begin.

Thats the design package a lot of people use. Only missing part is that saving, loading and importing fittings is disabled but you can export your setups to keep a note of them.
