Free For All

Arena style or whatever free for all. This would give everyone who hates depending on people they have never met to play well an alternate game mode. I hate scratching my head while I try to figure out what the other members of the team are trying to accomlish. I had a match the other day where a single mech was capping our base. What did the bonehead team member do as I watched from halfway across the map on my way back? He circled around the cap square and never entered it. I helplessly watched our cap bar slowly dwindle away for no good reason at all. We were up 6-3. Sad. My only alternaitve now is to just sit in my own base and watch some TV while the game plays out.
A free for all game mode would end all of that irritation for a lot of us.

You know if you hit "Y" you will be able to chat to your team and inform them to step in the square. New players don't always know that will stop the cap.

I thought to myself, 'Hey, wouldn't it be cool if they added a mode where I could stop thinking? Having to type to people and play, all at the same time, sure is getting stressful on my poor 'ol brain cells'
Then I realized I wasn't stupid. FFA is the worst game mode in almost every game. This isn't a fragfest, brain dead FPS.

While I agree that is does not hurt me for a FFA to exist. Taking the already limited time and resources they have to create another, inferior mode, is something I do not want to see happen. I'd rather them spend more time on balance issues and new/better content.
FFA would be fine down the road, but we need something more for now.

I don't care when it comes out. I just want it to come out. And it isn't an inferior game mode to everyone. To some, such as me, it is the pureset game mode where you do as well as your skill can take you. Sure, in a PUG, skill can help but it still comes down to whether or not you got stuck on a good or a bad team. It happens. I like to FFA because then my success or failure is all on my shoulders. A lot of people like it that way. Without it, the game is boring to me. I'd love to play MWO but with just team stuff I won't. To each their own and once again, I don't care if it comes out tomorrow. I just want it to come out.
I played a lot of competitive Unreal Tournament back in the day and my favorite game to play was a 1 v 1 on a private server with no power ups. Me, the other player, a map, and all skill. Sure I was on one of the top four team in the world and I did participate in ranked TDM and CTF matches. I only did that because it was required and being on a team game me access to their private servers for more 1 v 1 matches. I ended up ranked #8 in the world in 1 v 1 matches and that's all I cared about. The next closest thing was free for all. Nothing like jumping into a Deck 16 FFA game with seven random people and going on for hours with zero deaths and being called a cheater every minute or so. Eventually, another top player would hop on and then the game would really begin.
There are people, believe it or not, that couldn't care less about playing a forced team concept when it's PUGS. Sure I could join a team and practice and all that but that isn't fun for me either like I said.

As an ex-noncompetitive FPS player as well I can see where you are coming from. But I still think it's a waste in this game. In old school games like Quake and UT, sure 1v1 was actually a very feasible test of skill and was pretty competitive. I don't think this game is designed around that premise, nor do I think it should be.
Branching away from a specific game design generally lends itself to balance issues and other complications.

Generally I agree with you. But then I thought about how fun it would be to have some type of arena/gladiator mode available. All expenses paid, last mech standing gets a small cash prize? I like blowing things up, sure, I'll do that.

There you go. The first person that gets it. And if you don't like a FFA game mode just don't join that type of game. Don't select it. No harm to you or anyone else.
And I never said that I wanted a 1 v 1 system in this game. I want a FFA game mode.

The Devs are already planning to look at it.
From the MWO issue of PC Gamer (Issue #233, pg. 39):
Quote
"We're super keen on Solaris as a future expansion to the game, where we introduce a whole set of new maps, new content, and different styles of BattleMechs, but also new control features and ways the player interacts with the enemy. That's where we would look to introduce advanced melee, beyond just running into each other and maybe the occasional swat," Ekman says.
For additional information on Solaris VII, see here.
