I understand your reasoning, and felt the same way, selling off anything I didn't feel I would want to play more.
Now I slap my forehead regularly at the waste. I failed to realize that as tech changes, so do my needs (and preferences). Case in Point: Commando ECM or Raven ECM has pretty much transformed the composition of light forces as well as catapult builds and playstyle. I suspect there are other changes down the road just as significant.
So you buy a mech for 11 million. You sell it back for three million. Tech changes. Needs change. Suddenly you would rather give that 3 million back if you could have your old ride back too.
Sure, if you're in to FOTM builds and such. I like the Commando A and will be using it as my ride once I get the others maxed out on XP. i don't play a whole lot...only 200 games total since Open Beta released, so it'll take me a while. ECM may have 'transformed the composition of lights' in 4 and 8 mans, but it's not done much for PUGs. I regularly run into matches where only one team or neither team has any ECM. The only matches I've been in with multiple ECM have been with 4 mans.
Personally, I don't care about ECM and If I can't mount a BAP on the 3A, so be it. I like the Mech and I'm gonna use it. I also like the hunchback 4g. I'm not a munchkin player and am not seeking to min-max and look for highest K/D ratios. I prefer SRM 6 to streak. The damage potential is higher with the 6 and because I'm usually running around weaving in between the other team's Mechs, streaks are useless because of the need for lock-on. I like the AC 20 (though for some reason the Gauss seems a much more accurate weapon... projectile speed?) My Mechs are generally relatively close to stock with minor modifications... mainly because I haven't played enough to justify XL engines and such.
I sell stuff I'm never going to use once I'm done with it because I generally only like 1 build in a chosen group and there really is no reason to keep one around that I'm literally never going to use even if some new technology can only be used by a different variant.
