I'm just curious if this is possible? How do I unequip and upgrade I purchased? I have Ferro armor on one of my mechs and don't really care for it. How do I switch it back to standard?

Go back to the upgrades tab and click on the standard armor/structure next to the ferro/endo counterparts in the tab. Keep in mind though, that there will be a cost to change them back.

I tried that but I get an error "Too Heavy" Do I need to clear my loadout first?

Most likely you need to lighten the tons those upgrades saved you, so I would just empty out the chassis.
