I was thinking the same thing. A single city in the US can get 50 thousand signatures on an issue. You need around 250 thousand votes statewide to get an Initiative on the ballot, which happens every election here.

Not everyone would sign a petition though, so the numbers seem accurate enough.

Take an example from people attempting to make a petition on the forums.
