@OP

This is the only question that matters.

Do you want dual AC20?

If yes, then get a K2. If no, then get a 4X.

That is all.

As I said... specialized builds.

Well I'm completely open to other mechs as well, those were just the two I had assumed would do the best. truepointdexter I like your suggestion. It sounds like quite a machine. Are the lasers really effective? I guess its just the hugeness of a gauss or AC shot that makes it seem like they do so much more damage. Thanks everyone.

and +1 to the dakkadakka plus :) lol I love that name

EDIT: Based on Truepoindexters Idea at looking at other variants, and all the brilliant information everyone here has given me, I'm looking at the 2X. It seems pretty awesome. Has anyone had real experience with this variant?

My only problem with the 4X is the low top speed. I prefer my Phracts to have a top speed of 70ish kph and you just can't do that in a 4X.

Never doubt the power of basic plain old ML's. Nearly every mech mounts some number of them for a reason. In fact 4 ML = 1 AC20 in terms of raw damage. Just need to have the heat sinks to support them.

As for the mech the only thing I want to warn you on is the cost. It's highly optimized but uses Endo Steel, Double Heatsinks, and replaces the Engine. On top of the 5.9 million CBill cost of the CTF-1X you're looking at about 600k for the Endo Steel, 1.5 million for Double Heatsinks, about 1.9 million for the new Engine. That's just shy of 10 million C-Bills not including replacing the weapons.

EDIT: And I would suggest not selling anything to make that money since inevitably you will want that item again later.

I'm seriously thinking I will buy the 2X. thanks for everyone's help! Unless the SRMS are not as useful as lasers. Although I use them on my hunchback and when they hit, they hit hard.

Sounds great to me! The 2X is solid. I have several team mates who run them often and they do very well. I think they're using something like 3 ML 1 AC20 2 SSRM2 or something to that effect. Good luck to you!

Something to take into account is what the mechs were designed for.
The Cataphract was made for city fighting, so for example...its arms are good for brawling but it doesn't really need to be fast.
I don't know much about it though because i tried it and just didn't like it.

The Catapults (including the K2, my mech of choice since CB) were made for long-range support, so you can make it very fast (mine moves at 84.4kph) to get where you're needed, but it's bad for brawling because it has a massive center torso, and also a massive head hitbox. People will always aim at your center torso because it's so big and the side torso's are small, but they will often hit your head just by accident and kill you.

I thought I'd take the Cataphract as my first heavy mastered mech (avoiding the Dragon since I don't need another medium and Catapults because I feel they're massive cheese) .... so I started with the 4X, which was probably a mistake and turned me off from the chassis.

Don't make the 4X your first Cataphract is my advice!

K2 is by far the better of the two in terms of sniping due to the high gun position allowing you to snipe from a hull down position, tight grouping and good torso twist. 4X is good for the additional missile slot which gives you more flexibility but lesser energy weapon flexibility. I have both. :)
