I had been running a e8400 3.0 Ghz dual core up till today. A couple weeks ago I had decided to try to squeeze a bit more performance out of the rig and overclocked it up to 3.6Ghz. I hadn't overlcocked a CPU since the old pentinum 2 SL2W8. Bumping the dual core to 3.6 didn't really make a difference for MWO. As soon as I'd get into a close firefight, the framerate would drop down below 10fps and would be come a stutterfest.

I didn't have a lot of money to spend, so upgrading to a sandy bridge that I could overlcock really wasn't an option. I lucked out and got a used q9550 on ebay for 70 bucks and just got it installed today. Running at stock 2.83Ghz, the framerates in close up fights are much better now. I can finally play my jenner again. I've only noticed it drop down to 16fps once in a big fight, generally its staying in the 20s in the big battle royales, and the stuttering is gone (other than the sound stuttering, but that's not as a serious issue as the video stuttering). There is the occasional hitching, but finally, this game is playable again. Since the performance hit happened awhile back, I had been forced to play slower mechs and try to keep at distance so my game wouldn't slow to a crawl.

Couple hours in running at stock speeds, I decided to overclock the new to me cpu and got it running at 3.4Ghz. MWO is running decent for a change. It sucks that this game pretty much requires a quad core as bare minimum, but at least the first gen quads do run the game pretty decently.

My old Q6600 @2.4 GHz ran the game fine, as do my new i5 3570K.
Both of them use a really old HD4870 until the next paycheck comes in. Then it's GTX 670 time :P

But yeah, I do believe there's a confirmed performance issue with Core Duo processors.

Yeah, I've been running it on a Q6600 at stock 2.4 and it ran okay, just upgraded last night to an ivy bridge i5 quad at 3.4ghz, haven't seen yet what the difference is.

Okay, that's the exact same upgrade I made. Newegg black friday deal?

If you get a 670gtx, I'd suggest the EVGA FTW Edition. I just built a pc using that card and I have everything on "very high" at 1920x1080 and even in brawlfests my FPS doesn't go down below 50.

The card is HIGHLY overclocked for both the memory and the GPU itself. It's an absolute beast and for the price you can't do better.

with multicore processing becoming more mainstream and mobile, im willing to bet exponentially more programs will require 4+ cores.

Nah, the PSU said "POP!" a couple of weeks back and took the motherboard with it, so I went to my local computer store and swapped the old motherboard, the Q6600 with its 4 GB DDR2 RAM for a P8Z77-V LK Motherboard and an i5 3570K with 16 GB DDR3 RAM. It's been an expensive autumn, so I had to wait for the next paycheck for the GTX 670.

The difference between the Q6600 and the 3570K is... well, I was pleasantly surprised, didn't think it would be that much of a difference (although I'm sure some of the speed is from going from DDR2 to DDR3 RAM) :)

Yeah, that's the one I'm eyeing.

Ouch, I hate it when that happens.
Still, good to hear the upgrade will help out.
Also ended up with 16gigs of used DDR3-1333 RAM from a room-mate for it. Much better than the 4gigs of DDR2-800 I was using.
