hunchback always works as a good first mech.

Depends on playstyle. Hunchbacks/Centurions tend to be solid if you're careful to stick with the team (they're not good alone). Cataphracts/Catapults/Dragons do better for players who like to run solo hero a bit more. Assaults are fun too though if they get into trouble they're too slow to get out. Scouts are a blast too!

So really before we can answer... what do you enjoy doing?

I went with a Jenner. Lots if fun, high speed 113kph+ and low armor keeps you on your toes alot more

some time, i know...it'll be worth it if that's your playstyle though....either an assault or heavy. You might like a hunchback (medium mech) but they do get torn up pretty quick.

4SP was my 1st pick and I regret nothing. Awesome, all around mech, and easy on the wallet.

Wanna brawl? Go for it, just don't be the guy leading the charge. (I have the best luck shadowing Atlas pilots and stealing their kills  )

Wanna LRM? Won't put out damage like the DDC, but you wont be a slow moving turret either.

This thing can get to around 90KPH with Speed Tweak, and it's the mech I have the most fun in. Buy it, play it, thank me later :(

You don't want to be stationary for prolonged periods of time in any Mech but the role that comes the closest would be fire support. So you should look into either a Catapult K2 or one of the Awesomes.
To answer your other question, PPCs and Larger Lasers are the long range energy based weapons.

It took me roughly 12 hours to get two Mechs (Jenner and Centurion) and make a additional million c-bills.
I'm decent at the game with a modestly positive W/L who plays 75% of the time solo vs using TS3.

So your looking at roughly the same if you want to get into an Assault mech with money for modifications and future repairs

Assault or Heavy. I'd suggest a heavy to start with since it'll maintain some mobility. Cataphract or Catapult.

Strong energy weapons? Large Lasers, ER Large Lasers, and PPC's are all viable. Some more than others. I know that the 5 Large Laser Cataphract 1X is popular right now.

Why your first purchased mech should be a HBK-4SP

no one is really 100% sure. there seems to have been a malware attack on MWOMERCS.com, but the mods / devs say no, yet peoples antivirus is blocking the site for saying that known malware is infecting it. it's up in the air if PGI's email database was hacked, as people have been getting an email with "Windows 8 is fail" in the subject line, with a most likely malicious link in it...i think that's the jist of it.

I'm at work, and would think my offices firewalls and AV would prevent me from seeing the site if there is an issue..other people say no, but I guess it all depends on the settings here. I did notice that at some point this afternoon the site status was "offline", and I currently see nothing in the status bar at the top where it normally says "online". All afternoon I've been seeing some odd things when replying to threads like this...like formatting options that weren't there 6 hours ago.

4SP comes highly recommended and you can move to the 4P and 4J if you want an easy time maxing them out (you can toss your 4SP items into the 4J and it will work almost the same and vice-versa).

4P in the right config has the lowest repairs among all of them.

Please go look at the mech guides in the guides section. I'm sure it will give you enough insight on what to purchase.

To make fast cash and have an all rounder Hunchback 4P/4SP . If you want to do fire support Catapult / Cataphract. If you want it really slow, Atlas or Awesome, but with the role of an assault comes a bit more responsibility, people will tend to follow you around also a much higher repair / reload bill.
