Reviewing my stats, I came to a conclusion.
I work much better when I focus on one or two Mechs instead of spreading out my time through my stable. I am determined, however, to Master every single Chassis before I settle into my favorite for the rest of my life.
My (F)Atlas D is my absolute favorite, but he's been pricey to repair (not anymore, apparently) so was getting less play so I could save money faster. I've got 12,000xp and all the Basics done, but no other Atlas chassis in stock to progress further down the line. I typically get 1-4 kills per round with the big guy and love the feeling of being in a solid rumbling machine. It just feels right.
My Ilya Muromets came in a close second for feeling good - but cost less to repair so I'd end up using it more. It's got all the Basics and 18,000xp in store, but no additional variants to keep moving forward with. The dual Gauss is highly effective and lots of fun. I'd routinely get 1-3 kills per round with this Mech.
These were my two stable mechs for my first 60 rounds when I got back into Beta after being out for a while. My K/D ratio was close to 2 and my W/L ratio was 63% - through straight PUG'ing without teams. It's nothing to write home about, but I never felt like I was hindering the team.
Then I decided to branch out and stop spending all of my time accumulating experience in Mechs I couldn't advance.
My K/D is now approaching 1 and my W/L is close to 49%. In short, I've been sucking.
I'm okay in Lights, but tend to get popped by other Lights easily and only very rarely do I score a kill; I admit the ECM Raven is painfully easy to do well with but I can't drag a team to victory with it.
I'm abysmal with Mediums - I rarely get kills and tend to rank low on damage. My YLW is practically a joke - in 70% of my rounds, the gun arm gets ripped off before I lose torso armor and I'm left with 2 MPL to tickle people with (even in Closed Beta, Centurions were my absolute worst Mech).
I enjoy Heavies, but between the (F) Catapult C1 and the Muromets, it's not much to work with. Both are maxed out in Basic. Even with the Catapult and LRM issues, I tend to get 0-2 kills per round and rank 300-800 damage.

I don't buy mechs if I don't plan on buying 3.

I'm fairly new to the game, but eventually I intend to Own four Mech that I will get to master...
I love the look of the AT-ST like mechs...
Therefore I will have:
1-Jenner... Almost done mastering them .. F version is the best
2-Cicada with as many lasers as possible
3-Catapult K2 ErPPC (Too bad the other waste space on missiles)
4-Stalker (can't wait to try that stuff)
In a 1000 years if the humanity still relies on ammo and amunitions, I will lose faith in our kind...
Laser, magnets and microwaves is the name of the game

Mastered one Jenner (was in-process when ECM came out) and Raven 3L. Working on mastering HBK-4SP, and will likely pick up a heavy or assault today--either an Awesome, Stalker, or K2 Cat. I don't care to keep too many mechs on hand at one time, and I'm honestly having the best time so far in my 3L Raven. One could say that I'm so far specializing in Recon/EW mechs. I'm not ashamed of that...

Mastered Ravens and Centurions. Elite status on Catapult. Working on Atlas, Cicada, and the others. Each type has both pros and cons. Have not found my favorite yet, althought the Raven 3L rules!!....Fear my Raven!!

I already caught, and elited, them all. I have 5 empty mech bays so I can buy every stalker variant as well.

Master of the Commando/Hunchback/Cataphract/Awesome(worst mech ever..)/Stalker/Atlas
Currently working up Raven all I Got is a 3L.
So my mech bay has.
As7-ddc/COM-2D/hunch-4sp/cataphract2x/stalker-3f,5s,3m/awesome,9m,8q,/raven 3L ended up selling some mechs because I Didnt have enough mech bays.

Got all chasis except cicada (all elite) and commando (don't like it) to master.
Usually I buy a new chasis and get all basic skills for a variant, then do the same for 2 more variants. Then do the same with elite skills till master is unlocked. By that time I have enough money to get a new chasis to start with.
Once I have master for a chasis I sell the variant/variants I don't like...mechbays don't grow on trees yet ^^;

While I have 4 Hunchies on elite, I have mastered my AWS-8R with now over 20k xp left, which I can't put anywhere. That beast is just so much fun to pilot
Also got a dual gauss 4x which I don't play often and which is at 7/8 right now.

I have elite for Commando, Hunchback and Cataphract. Also have an Atlas and an Awesome.
When I was leveling my hunchback I got very nice scores with that most of the time. Lately I've been playing Atlas, Muromets or Commando and when I go back to my hunchbacks I generally suck. So I think there I definately some getting used to or mind set to piloting certain mechs. I remember when I started playing hunchback I really sucked but after a while I learned the mech and got decent scores with it.
Not sure which I want to master after this. The Atlas D-DC is so easy is feels like cheating. My awesome 8Q is a real challenge but I like that. But the challenge is so hard sometimes that I get discouraged. The 9M seems like a really fun ride from what i've read so that might be the next mech I want to get Elite skills for. But it's so ridiculously expensive.
