With that said, the "right" way to do it would be to "mostly" cap the base then go join the main battle-group. If the main battlegroup dies, then you finish capping so that you still get the salvage bonus. The reason this works is because it's not even worth sending mechs back to block a cap anymore, if the game ends pre-maturely everyone loses.
Fortunately, this is way too much for most light mech pilots to understand.

I think Assault mode should have always been TDM with Base Cap as a last resort so you didnt have to find that commando in hiding.

Assault was never about capping really. The cap part as to prevent long matches cause of jenner squirrels.

Play conquest, it's more likely that combat is forced.
