First, I have not played TT. Curious though if the variant 'identifiers' actually have some underlying meaning, or if they're just random letters. Like for example the hunchback:
HBK-4P
HBK-4SP
HBK-4G
HBK-4H
HBK-4J
Thanks

Is There Any Meaning To Variant Naming Schemes?

Some of them, yes. K = Kurita, D = Davion, L = Liao, S = Steiner, M = Marik. For many others, no. They are not consistent.

though from some of the original board game fluff secondary or non-standard letter designators were region, planet, or (usually)company specific. not all letter designators were explained however.

Yes, a lot of the more classic designs do relate to which great house designed the variant. Most D variants are davion and tend to have lots of autocannons, while K variants are usually Kurita and centered around PPCs. This trend does tend to stop with most newer mechs and variants.

And here I was thinking that adding a 'K' to the end meant it had PPCs and a 'D' meant it had ACs!
