Is this a "feature" or?

A feature?

No one is really sure. This is the one item that I will continue to hound the Devs about until I hear something. It's been really bad all the way back since closed beta with the move to CryEngine 3. There have been many posts, and even a poll. But no word as to what the deal is with this. The worst part, IMHO, is that it can be caused by your own weapons fire as well.

Are you talking about being blinded by the weapon's glare?

I usually have this issue massively on Forest Colony. On River City is quite minimal and i guess i do not have it at all on any of the Frozen city.

To me this issue is extremely annoying. The only counter is switching to Heat Vision but i don t like that solution.

This subject has no answer anywhere. I do not even know if this is recognized as an issue at all.

In my opinion is generated byt a gamma issue on the map light environment. Gamma mixed with high glare equals in blinding your sight when in close cquarter combat.

I hate that.

It happens when the weapons actually hit me. For example someone shot some LRMs at me and i ducked behind cover, they still hit my arm but my screen went black, i could still target but everything went black.

Also this didn't happen prior to this patch, at least not in the last patch, i seem to recall maybe this happening in CB.

Your pilot suffered a critical hit: concussion.

I have a major problem with this blacking out too, its as if some version of HDR is being kicked into overdrive, and just, UGH take it out its basically makes me give up once it happens to me as playing in heat mode if forced enough as it is on most maps.

it seems to be improved for me as of this patch... what vid cards are you guys running... if you're running ATI it may be something with the engine, since it's partnered with Nvidia... and Nvidia loves to screw with ATI users.

Im nvidia 570 - with very high gamma, its just so frustration to basically become blind in the middle of a fight, and launching lrms from my atlas while on 2/2 zoom blinding me is just not cool

it happens to me a lot on Forest Colony and some on Rive city. This is a bit annoyance to me as well and has caused me to die many times because as im being hit from someone who is chain firing, my screen stays dark and i can not see to fire back.

When we introduced CryEngine 3.4 some of the HDR values got out of balance, we discussed with the art team and it's on their plate to look at re-balancing the HDR. Bottom line it will get looked at though currently no ETA.

Thanks for chiming in Matthew, any possible chance of there being an option to disable it for the time being?
or point me to the config file and I/we change the value manually?

to all those questioning Night and thermal vision... Mr Matt Craig also had this to say when I asked him about the blacking out just a few minutes ago.

"We will though as I mention no ETA at this time, we have some other high priority tasks to get to first but not far beyond that I want to address this along with night vision and thermal etc. we'll likely do them in the same pass."

I'm glad IGP/PGI is aware of this. For my husband and myself, it only happens on Forest, usually if we are bombarded with lasers. For me, the screen gets so dark that I can't see anything other than the red triangles that denote roughly where the enemy is... it has made me seriously had that map.

I thought this was your 'mech's view screen polarization affect, what keeps you from going blind when you take a lazer or PPC to the face.

Though why it has to last so damn long I don't know...

I would hope that you all don't put it off for too much longer. It makes Forest Colony very un-fun to play.

Un-fun is bad for business.

well i sent Matt a pm with what i have done in it and didnt get told i cant post it here so i will....

He just said thanks so im not sure what to take as the meaning, and im sure he is busy so i wont pester him, and just post it instead.

Add this to the system config file, might help you

r_HDRRendering = 0

Ive only been lucky enough to drop on forest colony a couple of time to try it out (damm random MAPS!!! ARGH!)
But it seems to do the trick.

the method i have been using to reproduce the error is to point blank ppc a wall, that ususally get my screen black.
with this addition to the config it doesn't happen any more for me.

But due to the random nature of the maps i haven't been able to completely test it for like a solid 30min - hour.

hope it helps everyone ;)

Its not working, nevermind

I've noticed something about this as well, especially when I roll my AC20 cat. When the screen goes black, I cannot fire my weapons. I have to wait until the screen clears before I fire. It seems more like a bug than a feature, but who knows?

Thanks for the tip, I don't remember the screen darkening being this bad since SSRM cats roamed the battlefield. I just assumed it was fixed, I wonder what has made it (seemingly) so much worse since the patch. I spend the last 20 seconds of a match in utter darkness, shooting at red target boxes hoping that i had an open firing lane.
