So, here's an idea: What's the craziest Computer Build ya got going right now?

I found that my Q9300 QuadCore processor was getting too hot with my old heatsink, and my GPU was gettng warm... and my PwrSply...

So, I found a 4-Step solution.



Everything got cooler by more than 10 degrees C over using the stock fans
$15 solution

ROFL. I did something similar to a P4-3.0ghz Intel system, side case off and a power fan blowing into it. The AC in the apartment had died during the summertime and that was the only way I could keep the system cool enough for a week til the AC was replaced. I also had 2 fans in one room blowing air out while another fan blowing air in from the shaded part of the apartment. FYI, most of my apartment faced west so evenings really sucked.

I once saw a piece of dryer hose hooked to the side panel with a big fan, then stuck out a window. I live in northern michigan, where it is regularly below freezing for days or weeks at a time. Worked great.

That's basic stuff there. Here's some better examples-


This guy used a plastic tub for his water-cooling systems reservoir and dropped in some frozen milk jugs.



This guy ran duct work from his/her window so his/her computer pulled cold air from outside directly into the computers case.

And while I can't find any pics of it right now, I've seen where people have used long hoses in the water-cooling loop to be able to have thier radiator outside thier window in a bucket of antifreeze with it being 0'c outside.

Wouldn't that kind of let moisture into the system?

Assuming he's from a country that has snow 24/7 (since the room temeprature would be smaller inside during summer otherwise, cooking his own computer), the air oustide would be pretty dry.

I wish I had taken photos of some of my old PCs ... hehe definitely rigged some sketchy setups ...

My old faithful had a second power supply jammed into 2 5.25" bays so that I could have 350 extra watts (for free!) and double the power connectors. I had to short two prongs on the motherboard connector and assemble a second power switch into the front panel to get it to work. It was neat because if you didn't know there was a second switch to hit, you couldn't boot the PC . More pics please!

Did the same thing years ago. My high-end-doom-machine (AMD Sempron 1,8k, GeForce 4) was too hot, no money for better equipment > ventilator

I've had to do this too many times. At least it works reliably.

I had to reduce vibration by using sticky felt tabs between the fan and computer tower (cheap solution, again). Also, the fan is so freakin effective (and loud) that I now have it in-line with a dimmer switch to slow the fan down to about 1/2 of it's default "low" speed.

Phase change. You use the compressor from an air conditioner or similar (as the ones in a fridge would burn out), and modify it...slightly. The setup that guy has there is a single phase with probably a maximum low temp of around -15 under load (maybe). Some of the guys over at my main forum have cascades that do -70C. Dry Ice is -76C for comparision. Nothing like running 5.5-6GHz 24/7
