Joystick! I've heard good arguments for both keyboard-mouse and joystick but when it comes down to it I love my joystick for the feeling of immersion it gives me. The allure of MechWarrior has always been driven by the simulation aspect of the genre for me. I plan on playing MWO competitively but I'd stick with my joystick even if keyboard-mouse ended up being the "more viable" option. I love my joystick.

If you want real speed and precision I would recommend you try a Wacom tablet or similar...for point and click they are just amazing, but I just can't do Mechs (or any other vehichle sims) without a joystick and I will be using my trusty old Gravis Destroyer aftershock.

It has pretty good speed and precision, multiple buttons and accelorator, and it's just about bullet proof...gone through years of MW4 and flight sims and still going strong.

I'll be using my trusty Sidewinder Precision Pro that I think I've had from Mechwarrior 3 on.

When I first started playing Mechwarrior (3 was my first) I used a mouse and keyboard, did ok. When I played MW4, I upgraded to a Sidewinder 3d joystick, it became my preferred control method pretty quickly. Keyboard/mouse doesn't even compare.

Logitech extreme 3D pro is best for me! It has twist ,thumb joystick, and multiple buttons all that I need right in one place!

Tough call. I'll probably start with the keyboard and mouse, then will attempt with the better reviewed joystick/controller and see which I am more comfortable with. (Of course I expect some growing pain with anything other than a mouse/keyboard).

Edit: I used to have a microsoft sidewinder that was great for MW4. Hopefully I can find something similar.

well i'll be different
joystick and mouse
and just for fun usb pedals

joystick allows more control over turning the keys
mouse more precise aim
pedals are fun for turning or side views, or jump and look down

It depends on the game. The mouse is awful in MW4. But the joystick is equally awful in MWLL. Though I have a feeling I'll be using the mouse for MWO. It's just a much more precise means of control in modern games, and aiming is very important in MWO.

However, I love the immersion of the hands on throttle. It's also a lot easier for me to adjust speed and leave it using a HOT. There's a rocker/slider on my throttle that can be used to control the rudder on planes, but I've found that it works great for turning a mech. So the best setup I have is using the rocker to turn, throttle for speed, and mouse for torso movement. There's also 10 programmable buttons on my mouse and 6 on the throttle so I don't have to rely on the keyboard too much.

HOTAS Cougar modded with Ian's Uber II NXT gimbals + Cubpilots Hall Sensors + modded CH Pro pedals

It feels incredible. Nothing you can buy retail feels anything like it. Worth every penny too.

Some dude mentioned the death of flight sims... Are you kidding?! I fly EVERY night online versus humans in Falcon 4.0 BMS 4.32 (AMAZING mod for Falcon... fast jets ROCK) as well as Rise of Flight. Tons of fun can be had in the skies. Anyone who thinks flight sims are dead just isn't looking hard enough (really, looking at all). They're alive and well and better than ever.

I would like to use the same joystick I had, Saitek St290 or something...it was an awesome Joystick and it did just enough to really work for me. The X52, my dad and uncle have and had it and I found it to be unbelievably unwieldy. However, it seems as if this game will play better with a Mouse and Keyboard...something about it looks that way..especially if the devs are advertising a mouse keyboard tutorial here on the forums.....

considering most joysticks out there have huge customizable mapping abilities, it would be ungodly how hard it would be to make a thing like that for JS, they did say they will be supported, and thats good enough for me and my saitek x52

Ok gents. Been useing mouse and keyboard for 10 years and very good at it but...

There are very good reasons for stick and throttle, one being all the buttons and switches

I have built in my work shop/den and 5ft by 3ft cockpit, useing an x65f flight controller and combat peddles all by saitek
I'm sitting in a SCAT pro racing seat with fixed back and I built arm consoles that are secured very solidly to the base
It's 50% enclosed as a cockpit right now and I have plans for a completely enclosed cockpit

Just got it somewhat finnished this last weekend and have spent this last week mapping everything to use in mw4 mek tek online

I found out that I'm a noob again!!! It's so different then mouse and keyboard !! I'm gonna have to learn all over again!!

The x65f is just awsome!! The stick doesn't move , it's force sensing and you can
Program how much force it takes to move the reticle

I should be done testing and in servers by the weekend. And I'll get pics posted here soon

I do not have any issues using a JS in MWLL. Must be your actionmap is messed up or your JS's software is not "tuned" properly. Or both.

The joystick "works" in MWLL, but there's no non-linear sensitivity curve options, so aiming is quite difficult, especially when zoomed in. Either it's too sensetive when zoomed in and fine when zoomed out, or fine when zoomed in but too slow when zoomed out, I can't for the life of me get a happy medium. The joystick I have isn't the best and doesn't have it's own software, so I have to rely on the game for sensitivity settings. It would work great if they had curve options, but alas as it stands the mouse is so much more accurate. And that's made all the more important when you realize everyone is sniping from halfway across the map.

if you rock a mouse/keyboard as a pilot, rock on, but for me, with real flight time in a cessna, and tens of thousands of hours in simulators, i am programmed to use a joystick and throttle quadrant. Also, its how I 'pilot' games like this. Just how my mind works, sure alot of people are wired to play games like this in a same way, where they want a js at the least.
