Base capture is still a useful tool.

Yes sounds crazy but hear me out.

We all know since the much needed restructuring of the economy base capture has become mostly irrelevant as a method of victory. Most players ignore the bases entirely now.

I say they are wrong. But not for the reasons you may think.

Picture it if you will:

Your team is locked in combat with a skilled enemy who is using cover well to his/her advantage. They have knocked out several of your mechs and driven back your attempts at assaulting them.
A direct assault is futile. So you send a light mech or two or maybe even a fast medium around their lines to cap their base.

Now why do you do this?

It forces the enemy to break cover to stop the cap. They don't want to lose their hard earned salvage due to losing the match. And in a PUG game this means several mechs to the entire team making an unorganized dash to their base.

You can now exploit their vulnerability catching them in their now exposed backs.

And yes this works. I've had it happen and it was a brilliant move.

For some, yes.
It's like I told another player in a match: Sometimes it isn't just about making money. Distracting and ticking off the enemy helps out as well.

Some folks just don't have the resolve to ignore the "Base being attacked" message. They'll start heading back by reflex.
For the more experienced player that means you have a target who is showing their back and NOT trying to hit you with weapons.

Honestly if I have a player who can drive, but can't shoot, I'd send him to the enemy square even if to tick them off.

Eventually the devs will tweak Conquest and Assault again to a point where base capping is viable to others.
People might as well get their practice in when they can.

Does that mean we should always try to capture base? No, but at least the option is there.

The caps a distraction to break up a defense and scatter a team.
