Hello.
In most previous mech games I have aways used heavy/assualt mechs so in this game I have decided to use lights.
I am currently using a jenner with 4 small lasers and an srm4. I seem to do well against the bigger mechs but other lights seem to rip me to pieces(especially the ECM streak ravens).
Just wondering if anyone can give me some advice on this type of combat.
Cheers.

Engine size matters, you want to be able to out run any other light mech out there.
Go for its legs, the current net code would require you to "rake" his legs with your lasers going from in front of the enemy mech to behind it.
If you're having issues shaking him, always double back to friendly mechs, I'm sure they will be more than happy to help.

Cheers...whats the thoughts on XL engines in light mechs? I am aware they take you out if ither left or right torso goes but the lights tend to go down fairly easily enyway so is this really a concern?

On a light you should go for the biggest XL engine possible. The extra speed is absolutly worth it.
On most other mechs, I prefer a standard engine over the XL.

That is because the lights are to slow I never see me blowing up in a XL 300 jenner because my right or left torso fall apart, no I die because someone shoot of my leg of or just give me an incredible lucky alpha shoot. I really enjoy it when a slow walking light try to do something or a light who want to sneak up behind and I am the one who is sniping his back with a volley of 4ppcs back to hell.
Slow mechs are easy targets so are lights who are slow. They are not big but with less speed they are vulnerable to all kind of hits. You even can outrun lrms or can do maneuvers to avoid them without cover.
You can have 2 types of mechs where XL engines are worth. Snipers/lrm boat like the Catapult and Stalker because they dont get much damage and they have small side torsos who are pretty hard to hit.
And the other type are freaking fast mechs. I have a Centurion D who walks 128kph with an 360 XL and this thing is really worth it, Most of the time I am the last one who is alive and do plenty damage.
Of course there can be another type of mech who is worth to get an XL, Mechs like Hunchbacks because what? When they lost their main gun or 7 lasers they are not really able to do anything so why don't die with most of your weapons too? Also you can handle the damage who you got when you just twist your torso in all directions all the time when you don't shoot and they cant really hit one section. That is really necessary on big mechs like the atlas. When you don't do that your weapons are gone in no time. I really love that when the big ones don't turn when I am sniping them. Two volleys of my preferred sniper mech and no mater what mech it is his side torso is gone and this thing shoots all 3,5 seconds, when they twist they are much longer alive.

Cheers for the comments...now I just need 4.9mil for the xl 300 engine....But at least once I have got it I can transfer it to other mechs when I start going for the set to allow elite skills:P

A mate from my team only have one xl 300 engine but he switch that to all types of mechs, I have currently the 300 xl in a Stalker

In my own lights (jenner and raven) in most situations I leg the other light mech, unless of course their torso has literally no armor left or is exposed then I go for that.
if your fighting a light mech with streaks my advice would be use the terrain, find ways to make him lose that lock. e.g. run behind a building stop, reverse and go full speed back out the direction you just came. I so this all of time and the other mech will run by you. Granted this won't work so well when collision is back in the game but for now it'll suffice. OR weave in and out of buildings then run back to your team if you can't take him or run behind him (make a mental note of his location and his direction because you'll lose track of him on the radar).
In a circle fights, drop your speed for a second then go full speed again, the momentary speed drop will let you aim your weapons at the other mech faster than you would normally. You could also do a JJ turn thingy, where you tap your JJ key for a moment when you turn to get a better turn radius. Or combination of both.
