Flight suit definitely flight suit, a flight suit with a built in cooling system would do a vastly better job at keeping someone cool then a simple vest and some shorts. It has a side effect of looking a hell of alot cooler then shorts as well.

I can see shorts being offered as maybe a joke customization item, but based off the art style they are going for, a much more modern and militaristic look, a full body "flight suit" like we see on modern fighter pilots would fit the art style much better.

Then again if they make shorts a customization item I demand to be allowed to drive my mech around dressed in a super fancy dinner party tux.

Keep the flight suit, it looks way better and makes more sense. Normally I like to keep to canon but this is one of those things you can take out of canon and throw out the window.

Here's the basic pilot model you have in the cockpit (as a matter of fact, he has more vertices than any of the mechs):

Tech Manual Pg: 41

Quote

Improving technology has provided old Star League-style combat suits that offer extra protection against the heat, but these are not yet widespread items. This is why so many warriors go into battle wearing uniforms more appropriate for the beaches of planets with minimal nudity taboos than the cockpit of an armored combat vehicle.

Sarna SLDF Mechwarrior entry:

Quote

The uniform of SLDF Regular Army MechWarriors utilized many advanced technologies lost following the Succession Wars. Over a synthetic, heat-resistant tan shirt and shorts was a cooling jumpsuit which used a synthetic coolant three times as effective as water in removing heat. The jumpsuit plugged into the 'Mech but also included an emergency pump and heat exchanger on his belt. Tubing in the MechWarrior's shirt connected to hookups in his cuffs which could connect to gloves and keep his hands cool. The jumpsuit also prevented "Hotfoot" by extending down the front and back of the legs and around the feet. Properly worn the uniform was airtight with its own air supply. The rank patch was initially warn near the throat on the helmet pad, though over the years this changed.

The neurohelmet was also smaller and lighter than modern examples, and could perform many more functions thanks to a biofeedback neural apparatus that was much more sensitive and did not require contact with the wearer's scalp. Such was the sensitivity that many warriors chose to fight with their visor and windows blackened, relying totally on the sensor information fed directly into their brain

So looks like your imagination can range from nudity all the way up to crysis style cooling suit. Take your pick.

Though surely mankini's and an afro wig would look better on an Atlas than a pilot?

shorts and muscle shirts are things that should be permanently excised from the lore for being mind numbingly dumb.

it's the future, they'll be wearing cooled nomex type flight suits.

I don't care how hot it is, if I can cook myself to death in a military vehicle in CVCs I can handle BBQ'n in my mech cockpit as an avatar in a friggin jump suit.

the guy in back is Jeremiah Rose - he's wearing one of the advanced Star League cooling suits he got from ComGuard. The guy in front is wearing traditional Clan MechWarrior garb.

Actually, the guy in front is an elemental, not a mechwarrior. So not traditional Clan Mechwarrior garb at all :)

MacKerris, that's a utilikilt. A utilikilt is not a real kilt. Real men wear kilts. Not kilts with pockets attached to them. xD

On topic, I prefer the flight suit. I'm fine with some lore-bending...A lot of BattleTech lore was written in the 80's and early 90's. Yeaaaah. Those book covers and character art scream 80s-90s fashion. Flight suit just makes a ton more sense. It'd be flame retardant, would be the primary benefit. I'd rather be a bit sweatier than have my legs set on fire if I have to eject out of a dying 'mech.

Right, I keep forgetting that the 80's were practically dominated by Frazetta and his Contemporaries/Wannabe's. I'm no purist, so I don't mind the flightsuit, but they should at least make it an option to go pants-less for the people who so choose. 'Cause honestly, you're only hurting yourself if you wanna focus on throttling your joy-stick and playing with your dongles rather than focusing on the task at hand, in my opinon.

I think its fair to say mechwarriors in shorts won't look as cool as those in flightsuits.

I'd imagine the fire hazard of being in a 'Mech would make something like vehicle crewmember coveralls a necessity but artists renditions of mechwarrior combat clothing are manthongs like this

im having way too much fun with this gif, when I was a teenager I was reading the black throne novels and I left this one on the toilet tank and my dad thought I was into *** **** stories or something.

Star league tech included a suit that worked to combat heat fatigue. It was goretex and operated at a much higher efficiency. There was an inner sphere pilot in the books who had one. I forget his name sadly...

Jeremiah Rose, of the BlackThorns.

He had it because he basically stole it when he left the ComGuards. Some units like Wolfs Dragoons probably have it.

Most don't.
