I was planning on collecting and mastering all of the Heroes, but the prices might prevent that in the end.

The fact that I can buy, customize and custom paint my own mech is the main draw for me.
I don't care for "hero" mechs for these reasons:
1. Lack of a paint job that I can change/customize.
2. A backstory/identity to the mech that is so narrowly defined that I cannot begin to feel any connection to it.
The last one for me is really important. Right about the time that YLW came out I was about halfway through the Blood of Kerensky trilogy. Some folks can be kinda critical of Kai but I think I enjoyed his character the most. There are certain things about him that I totally identify with. I felt like seeing multiple YLWs everywhere, every match, kinda cheapened Kai & his father's legacy and that of the mech itself.
I want to acquire my own mech, build it up, have incredible experiences with them and forge my own identity with them not ride the coat-tails of someone else's fame.
The cbill boost and unique hardpoints has tempted me to buy both the Muromets and the new Dragon that can fit an AC/20 in its torso.
If PGI sold some kind of certificate that I could apply to my own mech to make it similar to a hero mech I would be all over it.
Maybe sell some one time use cosmetic item that goes in your cockpit that when applied makes your mech get the "hero" cbill boost? I would much rather buy something special if it would further enhance one of my own creations. I have no inclination to purchase something that I feel no connection to.
All this being said I will probably pick up Hero Mechs for the Orion though. I have this feeling that there wont be huge difference in the hardpoints especially where ballistics are concerned (the arm mounted missiles don't really do it for me). I know a Kerensky Orion is pretty much a sure deal... But im kinda surprised that folks have not been calling for a Lady Death Orion as much as they have been for Kerensky's ride.

I love the game, but spending $50 in DDO or LOTRO has gotten me a whole lot more than the equivalent of two mechs. By comparison, MWO seems hopelessly overpriced.
YLW currently running a UAC5 and an ER LL. Overall I enjoy my CN-9D a lot more though, as I can run basically the same loadout and also have LRM (YLW hard points suck, and mediums tend to be squishy already due to limited armor and limited weaponry). Maybe if I eventually put an XL engine in my YLW I'll appreciate it more. 30% C-Bill boost isn't terribly exciting when the mech can't survive more than a minute past first contact with the enemy...

I have only found this but i think its pretty normal:
"29 percent of males and 21 percent of female players buy items"
“The top 10 percent of players can account for as much as 50 percent of all in-app purchase revenue”

I guess the 80/20 law applies here as well.

You are definitely the light mech kind buddy.

That would be a Flame with ballistics in the shoulder.

The whining and crying about hero mechs has calmed down, only Cent pilots had to deal with the self justified friendly fire arm removals and TKs because of the pay2wangs. Muromets and Flame have legitimate hardpoint advantages, but not nearly the in game hatred on their release.
I am not opposed to buying a hero mech in the future, but I am a long way from ready to purchase MC given the current state of the game.
