Keep the servers on, utilities paid, employees paid, rent paid, etc... Have to keep it all going so they can eventually work on those parts of the game you want fixed. It doesn't happen fast (we've learned that by now). Still, it happens regardless, and they need income to do it.
Plus they need banked profits to start up future projects, because MWO won't last forever.
You know, business stuff.

Maybe the game is winding down. Might be very likely.
So, PGI doesn't sell a mech pack. Now they can't fund the operation, pulls the plug on MWO, how will they be fixing the game again?
Assuming your right and the game is losing momentum, wouldn't you rather they provide you a game to play (for free) for longer...maybe another year or even two with slow changes, or shut down in about a couple of months and have no game to play?
I have this weird feeling that people think this game just magically happens with no cost to PGI (wages, rent, equipment, software licenses, etc...) and all money coming in goes straight to profit and the pocket.
Whatever *shrug*

They could instead get off their ass and fix their game and then more people would play and spend money, but no instead apologists insist that the second they stop handing over hundreds of dollars for mech packs that PGI will fold and shut down the game despite how much money has been poured into it already.

I have a feeling that if it was that easy, they would have done it. Hey, more money is better than less money.

Now come on. No need to be so harsh. It is well known that PGI will not shut down MWO until that BIG FAT WALK-IN SAFE they got in the back room is filled to capacity with the cash everyone sends them.
We know this because they have never spent any of the monies they have collected since 2011, and we know that because the OP and Pjwned told us so. Just truths right dawg? Gotta just Deal... LOL

They do it that way because it's easier to not do any real work and still get rewarded for it.

You're just proving my point.

So the only way people will spend money is if PGI makes constant moneygrabs, obviously doing anything else would result in the game being shut down immediately.
This could not be a better example of an apologist in action.

So, you mean the same thing people have been claiming for the last 2 years?
I disagree with the way the run their business, but with 17000+ people still playing from the looks of the most recent statistics, the game is pretty far from dead. That's definitely a large enough population to keep the game playable.

PGI does nothing but "fix the game" they get beat-up for not providing content or compelling reasons to buy stuff... PGI makes more content and they get beat -up for "cash-grabs" while the game still has issues in need of fixing and or they get beat-up for not providing the "right" content (mechs versus maps etc..)
Argument can be made that PGI would make more money if they just fixed things first... Sadly, while PGI just "fixes things" they continue to amass operational debt and require some revenue flow to keep the doors open.
It's a no win... PGI could excrete Tiffany cuff links and it ultimately would not be enough for some segment of this community.
