so, Xmas, new computer HP Envy, not sure of specs' atm but better than older pc.

new on this pc: Windows 8, Quad core , an AMD 747? sumthin'
Problem is the game is laggy/choppy now, like an FPS issue.

never had an issue on older system on highest settings, and now on the "better" system.
is this Windows 8, some driver I cant find to update, anyone else have this issue.

and for the record, I dont work with computers. I just need help to get MWO back to normal.

first thought - it's a laptop. Booooooo! That's the problem

Specific model is more helpful that "an AMD 747 sumthin'"

Regardless, is it a Laptop? Desktop?

I assume that "747" is a Radeon HD 7470.

First, we need to know what your quad core is. It's probably fine, but it would give a more complete picture of what you have.

If I had to guess, I'd say your Radeon HD 7470 is too slow, if that is, in fact, what you have. The minimum to really run this game well would be something like a 7770, and that has 5 times the stream processors and transistors of the 7470, so I think that new GPU just isn't going to work. I'm sorry, but that's probably about all there is too it, especially since the rest of your system should be just fine. I think you need another GPU. If your older PC was faster, maybe it had a better graphics card? Could you just do a swap between them?

At worst, you might be out the cash buying a replacement, but don't worry, you don't have to spend much if you don't have money after Christmas (like most of us?). If you can't scrounge up a faster video card, then a used Radeon HD 5770 should set you back like $30-$40, and a 5850 should be maybe $70 (these prices will take a few weeks to come back though, Christmas inflated things), and either would play the game just fine on mediumish settings. If you have a bit more and want to go for something new, get a 7770 or higher (or a Geforce GTX660 or higher? I seem to recall that being the minimum for Nvidia to have competitive prices).

Yeah, otherwise you've got a nice system, OP, so don't sweat it. Once you get that GPU replaced out, you'll have a great gaming machine, and there are GPU options (new or used, depending) to fit literally every budget.

Depends on budget but in a brief overview

Nvidia - 560ti 448 - 570 - 580 - 660 - 660ti - 670 - 680
AMD - 6850 - 6870 - 6950 - 6970 - 7850 - 7870 - 7950 - 7970

Are the ones that will run the game well, and most likely still available.

(caveat i may have missed one or two)

As of the moment, I dont have a budget, I want to be able to play my little game MAX'd. My inner child is SCREAMING. so I am gunna take another hit to the xmas card and "go for the gold" the only problem being I dont know crap about whats out there, and I obviously cant trust Captain Best-"Guy" behind the counter. So I plead to my fellow Mechwarriors to fill in on whats best.
Honestly, I am willing to go $325, maybe more if I can sell the 7450.

AMD Radeon HD 7870 or 7950,
or
Nvidia Geforce GTX 660ti

Is what you're looking at $200-$300

at $350-400, you're looking at a Radeon HD 7970 or Geforce GTX 670

Well since the budget is "whatever", then it's pretty much Radeon HD 7970 GHZ Edition or go home. I think the Geforce GTX 780 might be out soon, as well, but I haven't seen a solid release date.

Vulpes knows more about the various brands out there than I do, so I'm sure he has a recommendation lined up in that regard.

One thing is most of these GPUs will require you to get a new power supply as well in all likelihood. You'll want a 500-650w quality power supply to replace the low end PSU the HP came with, I would recommend taking a look at my power supply guide for that.

I run a single GTX560 Ti fermi superclocked powered by a 750W PS. works just fine.
