In the next two to three weeks I will be building a new computer.

My plans are to have as follows:
intel i5 3570k (3.4 ghz, lets assume for now I don't overclock).
Geforce 680GTX 2 gigs of ram
16 gigs of 1600 mhz ram
POSSIBLE a solid state drive, I haven't decided on this yet.

With this build, what kind of FPS can I expect to get on max graphics with MWO?

It all depends on your screen resolution. At 1920x1200 you'll get very close to 60. You only need 8GBs of system ram (unless you use virtual machines) so get an SSD for sure.

See the following thread for performance. The hardware limitations stop at a 660 ti ... notice how the CPU is the bottleneck, currently.

Since its CryEngine 3 your performance will vary depending on lunar cycles, how well it likes you personally, and other stuff. You should be able to run it on High, but like I said, depends on how CryEngine is feeling at the time.

Right now the monitor I have will only go up to 1920x1080, so no need for any higher resolution. As long as I get 50 FPS in the shape MWO is in, I will be happy. Thanks for the reply.

My PC is similar to yours but has a 660. I get 75+ at 1680x1050.

This will be my first self built computer, anyone have recommendations on overclocking? Should I spring the extra cash for a water cooling system?

Yep, have a similar rig. Highs of 70 +, lowest 45 in furball melee. See you out there!

Go for the gold bro, just get the best so your computer can handle most games that are out now and coming out later.

i7 (LGA Socket 1155)
Intel Z77 Motherboard
16GB DDR 2400 (or 2800)
An SSD is typically better for running the OS, then just get a bunch of 1TB SATA3/6 Drives and run them in RAID.

Make sure you get a case with good airflow. Some newer cases also come 'water-cool' ready, if you're feeling ambitious. Hot-Swap Drive bays are also nice in cases, but expensive. Hybrid water cooling systems are also nice, like these:

I've been told not to go with an i7 since I am only planning on using my computer fo gaming, why would you recommend one (honestly curious, if it IS advantageous to get an i7, let me know).

I have an i7 with two GTX680 4GB GPUs. Unfortunately this game doesn't support SLI. I get about 60 fps when nothing is happening and about 45 when stuff is blowing up. I think there is some kind of limit to the fps because at max I've seen it was 63 and it'd bounce right back down to 60 or less.

There is no difference (ie not noticeable) between an I5 and I7 for gaming, most games don't even take advantage of 4 cores efficiently let alone any more than that.

The spec you outline above, will play any game on the market and very well.

MWO is a different kettle of fish because it's in a poorly optimized state right now and it's pretty much luck of the draw.

i would go for a hd 7970 and overclock it with current drivers it beats the gtx 680 stock for stock, http://www.techpower...ormance/23.html and gives you the option to game at higher res if you decide to get a better monitor. If you have something that works right now i would wait it out as intel is supposed to release the new gen Haswell processors in april and it will have a different motherboard socket 1150 vs 1155. Also the GPU market is due for an update as well not sure of the release date yet on that though.

Get an ASUS mobo and use their AI suite to OC the CPU, I have an FX-4100 3.6 GHz OC'd to 4.2 GHz on a closed loop liquid cooler.

I think your right on the approximate FPS cap. I was running a pair of 690's @ 2560x1600 (No SLI of course) and saw the 60s with little spikes above it consistently. Out of curiosity I switched out the 690s for a trio of Tesla1070x (which is 12 690s or roughly 24 680s) @ 1TB of RAM each. I used a custom API which forces the trio to act as one regardless of the game settings. The FPS still stuck at about 62-64 with short spikes (a second or two) into the high 60s/low 70s.

I use it primarily for my business, high end gaming is just an added benefit. With the exception of the Teslas it would be closer to around $15-$20K. I don't have a good handle on the value as I'm constantly switching out hardware for testing. And a lot of the hardware in it depends on what contract I'm on.

However, the 3 Teslas are custom ordered 1U GPU servers that we use for the engineering of distributed simulation environments.. Each one is just over $90K if you tried to buy this particular configuration outright. I had my IT guys populate a few sever racks with them and theses are spares, so I'm "borrowing" them until they are needed.

With v-sync enabled, i doubt you would ever have a bad day/night. nice specs too - kind of similar to mine.

I-5 2500, GTX 560ti 1Gb gddr5 ram, 8GB Ram, 20Mbps internet connection.

If you sacrifice a goat, you'll probably get 60 FPS. Otherwise, expect 45-60.
