The reason the 'players online' tracker was removed before October-2012 was that there was a significant number of accounts actually playing during prime time. Numbers dropped from 3,000 in early August to under 900 people playing at that time.
Based on the frequency of 8-man's meeting each other, and doing some statistics. Most gamers estimate that there are less than 1,900 people who play this game during active North American prime time.
A simple estimate is to guess the normal population of this game, and see how many matches it would take of random 8-man teams before you would get to meet that same team again. Then goal seek the population back down to it's true population size.
