I would like to see that, actually.
But I would like to see it to all kinds of mechs. When Factions start, make certain mechs Prohibitively expensive in Cbills (like a Dragon in the FedSuns, or a Zeus in the Capellan Confed), or MC purchase. And I think even some of the "New Tech" designs, maybe should come out for a few months as a "MC Only" purchase, that after like 90 days becomes a cbill available mech, (though very expensive cbills) then finally after 6 months to a year, gets more "common" and cheaper to buy.
But then, I am weird like that.

Since most Hero mechs are crappier than the non-Hero variants I have no problem with this.
I only bought the Flame which is actually a great Dragon variant.
But:
Ilya - I rather take the 3D or the 4X
YLW: Only 4HP in total - WTF!? me wants me missles
Fang: Not very unique compared to the other Dragons

A variant/chameo that is only available for a faction.
Maybe even a mech that is faction specific. e.g.
Hatamoto-Chi for Kurita only
Archer for FRR only
Urban mech for

I know that money is tight for most, but I'm quite happy to pay out at the current price. Life would be better if everything was cheaper, but life isn't that fair

Well, in fairness, it ain't about the number of hard points, but:
Location, Location, Location.
Ilya is the only one 2 mount 3 Ballistics, with 2 in the arms, and the torso allowing for an AC20 if wanted. And the Wang is the only AC/20 capable version currently available (am still miffed over them taking away the AH), and the ONLY mech capable of elevating/depressing the fire angle of said AC/20. Add to that the ability to hit 100 kph (which the AH couldn't do) and it has a lot of value, in the right hands. And while I miss the missiles some, I found that for heat management, one almost always had to make serious sacrifices on the chassis, at that weight.
M only real knock, is that for all that, the thing can only mount 2 medium lasers, or 1 large, due to the CT location. Since the Canon Wang, had both lasers re-located to the left arm (When they added the Gauss and TSM), I wish they would have added 2 hard points there too.
Here.. I dropped last night with 2 friends for a couple matches, and the Cicada pilot went on a diatribe about the uselessness of Cents, especially the Wang. So, since I hadn't played with my Wang since my new mistress (the Cataphract) was released, I thought I would wipe off the dust.....

That is with an AC/20, 2 medium pulse lasers, near max armor, no AMS and 97 kph speed.
I gotta disagree when people hate on the Wang. Just makes me think they are a bunch of Gloria Steinem fans!
And I do LOVE Flame for allowing me to build my 3025/3050 Grand Dragon, even though PPCs wonkiness still forces me to use Large Lasers instead.
Fang.. well, Fang.. ummmmmm.... OK< you might have a point there.

I definitely do not say that the YWL or the Ilya are useless - I just do not see the uber-abilities they pose which would make them P2W.
About the Ilya:
I seriously thought about purchasing it. But then every viable build I coud find would work on either the 3D or the 4X.
I have no build I like that actually includes 3 ballistic HP.
I either use 2 Gauss or 4 AC5 (2AC5 2UAC5 maybe) or 1 AC20.
While I see the advantage of having the 2 Gauss both in the arms I can handle the 3D quite well and enjoy the jump jets.
Also I can put an AC20 on the 3D. And then there really is no place for 2 additional ballistics.
Only 2AC2 if you use a 250 engine. But with such a low engine rating why not go for the 4X with 4AC5?
Finally the 3D build can load 4 med las while the Ilya can only mount 3.
So no will never get an Ilya.
About the YWL:
I agree that it is a very unique ability to put an AC20 into the arm. Not really for the additional vertical movement,
but because you can fit an XL engine in there. (but then I rather use std on Cents besides the super fast D variant) So yes it is a viable mech. But as you will probably have encountered every decent pilot goes for your arm - and it is ripped of quite quickly. What remains is a 2med las torso. I usually disengage after I removed the arm to fight the real thread. The other Cent variants at least have some missles left at that point.
If they had relocated the nenergy HP to the other arm I would definitley get one though.
Conclusion:
Maybe I get one once the firing delay is removed. Also I would get one as a 3rd variant but I already got the A D and AH which I all like very much. So no need for the YLW ... yet
Tl;dr
Ilay - never
YLW - maybe if random firing delay is removed
PS: Shame on PGI for removing the AL!

Yeah, the worst part about this is that the devs clearly stated that everything would be available via in game methods, but here we are...
If they don't keep their word in this then what more can we expect? Will there be any shady tactics to squeeze more money out of us?

Heh... they TRY to take my arm, but that useless left arm is a great shield, and I am good at flanking and torso twisting so I lose my arm maybe 1 time in 8? (More if I get rolled and surrounded, but don't really matter then!)
I do have Zombie Cents though where the arm is just a nice inviting target. 2 Medium pulse in the CT, and maybe missiles in the side torso, and on the D, as big an XL as I can, the A, as big a standard as possible. That CN9-A tends to drive people nuts!
I will readily agree, there is no P2W factor to any of them though. Just don't like seeing my Cents get a bad rep. And the Ilya, well, if you don't have a version you lke on it, or any better than the 4x, etc, then yeah, don't run it. I like running dual AC2 (liked it more before they nerfed their fire rate) in the arms, and a Gauss in the torso, allowing me to keep shooting even if I get armed. But he 4X is my fave. the recent JJ gimp was the last straw for me using the 3D, which I thought would be my fave. I actually prefer the 4x, Ilya, 2x, 1x and then the 3d.

1) Yes the jump jet nerf killed the 3D. If you actually like dual AC2 + Gauss then I agree that the Ilya is the best variant for this. But it's just nothing I like to use.
2) About the YLW if they ever fix the random firing delay I might actually try one.
3) About Zombie builds - I especially like to use two large energy weapons on the Dragons secondary arm and put some MGs in the big ballistics arm. People always go for the big ballistics arm not realizing I own them with the other tiny stub
If the YWL had some eHP in the left arm *dream*
4) If you only loose your arm 1 in 8 matches I must say that you are a very good pilot. (At least I always go for the Cent arms first - then take the Awesomes which failed to reallocate back CT armor to the front)
Hope to meet you on the battle field going for that arm only to notice you're riding a zombie build.....
