I was thinking 4 damage every 10 seconds, times 3. Compared to a ML fired roughly 3 times in 10 seconds.

What an odd way to look at it. I mean, I see the comparison there, but its a very odd comparison to make.

I guess I squint a lot more when looking at the numbers then you do. ;)

The only way that is possible is if you, somehow, stole some poor guys kill that he actually worked for or your opponent killed himself.

Yeah, Ok. Did you record your amazing feat? Whose kill did you steal when the Enemy had .12 Health left?

I watched someone test 3 MG once. He fired at a fellow Dragon's leg at point blank range. The Dragon had max leg armor. It took about a minute and twenty seconds to get the leg to change to orange. There have been multiple math proofs on the forum that machine guns are very poor weapons. I always appreciate opponents who use them. I can literally just sit there kill them without being worried about them hurting me.

Do your team a favor and stop using machine guns.

I voted other. They need ether a large boots to damage internals, or simply do more ordinary damage, longer range would be nice too seems a bit short for a ballistic weapon...

3 MGs stacked together (drg-5N) does produce the DPS of a medium laser (0.4 x 3 = 1.2) and 1 ton of ammo last you like forever and is far easier to hit lights with. But of course, 1.2 DPS at 2.5tons really isn't as resource efficient as simply mounting a medium laser for 1.25DPS at 1ton.

Of course, I still voted Both since it could actually go with half the damage of an AC2 (making it something like an AC1 since there's no such thing) and 0.5 browings in real life definitely dun have 90m effective range...

And no, my Bukkake 5N isn't my go-to mech, its just something I play around with for fun once in a while. The MGs aren't the real deal though, it kills mainly with the 2 ERPPCs in its left arm. The 3MG stack is really just for self-defense. Playing it as a PPC sniper.

I vote other, just fix Machine guns to at least have the same damage per ton potential as in tt, and give people to use such a destructive weapon in close combat.

Here is some repost from another thread on a similar subject

Quote

Ok to put this into perspective:
Bt machine gun in this game translated exactly
.02 damage per shot- 10 shots per second-.2 dps- 20000 rounds of ammo per ton- 2000 seconds of firing- 400 damage per ton
Mwo machine gun
.04 damage per shot- 10 shots per second-.4 dps- 2000 rounds of ammo per ton- 200 seconds of firing - 80 damage per ton

80/400
.2

The Mwo machine gun has 20% the capacity for damage as the BT machine gun.
20%.

Now where am i getting the 10 shots per second?
It is 100 shots per 5kg reload , aka 100 per 1/200 of a ton each turn is 10 seconds 100 rounds per 10 seconds is 10 shots per second. Simple.

Basically, every weapon in the game has been buffed greatly, the MG, sure it does 2X damage, but it has 1/10 the ammo and when compared to other ballistics, it is the only one that got nerfed... Wat. Ac/20 does 2.5X fire rate and has MORE ammo. The ac/10 has 4X the fire rate and has 50% more ammo, the ac/5 has around 6 times, and the ac/2 has 20 time and they all get MORE ammo. The mg gets less ammo and gets a mere 2x damage boost, they could easily have just tripled the rate of fire like most lasers, and given it the same ammo.

Seriously. What.

LOL so let me get this straight...

For 3 tons I get 4 mgs and a ton of ammo per ballistic hard point. So I have a cataphract 4x so that means that I can mount 16 mgs (4mgs x 4 hardpoints) for 12 tons which is 6.4 dps; now each bullet has a chance to crit so i get 160 chance to crit per second all for 0 heat.

Now I still have crit space and heat to spare, so lets put in an srm4 with a ton of ammo, and 2 MPL. Ok this is build should still run cool.

This is the way this mech will play srm 4 = 10, 2 x MPL = 12 and 16 mgs = 6.4 making a total of 28.4 dps and an insane crit chance.

I'm thinking OP.

Yeah and It'll work like a charm.

I wouldn't say "4 per slot".

Maybe 2 per slot, tops.

MGs have never been meant to be powerful, they're meant as backups when you're overheating like crazy, and they're meant as an anti-infantry weapon, rather than anti-mech (Same with flamers).

They are NOT optimized, that much is true. However, I'm hoping down the road that PGI will start giving us things to shoot at other than mechs.

How many times are you going to regurgitate that lie?

Machine guns do as much damage as an ac/2 they have the lightest ammo in the game(200 salvos per ton) and are used in pure mech Vs mech combat for immense knife fight range damage.

If Flamers are anti-infantry weapons because they get a bonus vs infantry, then pulse lasers are anti-infantry weapons too.

Actually, 1 ton = about 1000kg. I have served in the marines when I was younger and I've never seen an MG weigh 500kg. The standard MG M2 browning is only 38kg. This means that for 0.5ton, it should come in a stack of at least 10 MGs per slot. Also, 0.5 armor piercing SABOT rounds has been used in browning MGs onboard warships for penetrating ship armor even today so MGs are definitely grossly misrepresented in this game.

Because FASA had never seen guns wielded outside of Arnold movies, there was no internet in the 80s, and the commies were our enemies.

As Alex Iglesias himself said, the .5 ton machine guns would be fair more like a GAU 8, although their 90 meter range would be totally bizarre.

But then again, a lot of things in Battletech are totally bizarre, because they're picked for game balance rather than realism.

Indeed... BT isn't perfect either. MWO should improve on this imperfection and make MGs more like AC1.

I just want a short-ranged, effective ballstic I can put on my lights and mediums. Four machineguns should be dangerous, but have tiny ranges.

It worked in every other mechwarrior game, so why isn't it like this in MWO?

you have your math wrong.

MG's don't do 0.4 damage.

They do 0.04 damage in MWO.

This is why Machine guns are junk, because the damage tickles.

Flamer does 0.4 damage.
