Seems like every time the torso armor protecting the AC20 in my Atlas D-DC gets stripped, the damn gun pops after another hit or two. Is it exceptionally fragile or am I just getting unlucky? I'm almost to the point where I'm going to switch a ton of AC ammo over to SRM ammo just cuz the damn thing gets destroyed so often.

I may be wrong about this, but here goes:

No. The AC20 has 10HP like every other weapon and component (except Gauss). HOWEVER, since the AC20 takes up 10 crit slots there's a huge chance (10/12 = 83% in the side torso) that it will take crit damage once your armor is stripped.

it takes 10 critical slots

which means, depending on what else is in the RT, critical hits to the RT have an 83-100% chance of crit'ing on the ac20, which has 10hp

vs, for example, dual ac5's, which take 4 crits each, and assuming you fill the last 4, there's only a 33% chance a critical hit will crit on a specific ac5, each of which has 10hp. so you have to do more total critical hit damage to knock out both ac5's, and there's a larger chance your critical hit damage will be scattered between the different weapons/items in that torso

83 if you fill the last 2 crits. if you don't, then when a critical hit does come along, it will affect the ac20, 100%.

The AC20 is rather large but has the same 10 hp that all other items have. So it is not fragile, but it is rather easy to hit. An other factor is that everybody either knows where the AC20 is located on an Atlas or shoots the right shoulder on any mech by default.

While I'd also like to see that the AC20 gets a bit more health, at least proportional to its size that won't solve the root of the problem. People are able to break through your armor, at that point you are about to lose pare of your mech already. So you need to torso twist to avoid taking damage on your right torso and avoid the whole problem altogether.

Cool, makes sense to me. I agree that bigger guns should probably be able to take more damage, but once your armor is stripped you're probably losing that whole section anyway. Still, so many times I've walked away from engagements with my torso intact but my AC ganked. Makes me sadface lol.

I highly recommend reading this thread

http://mwomercs.com/...-a-brief-guide/

It helped me understand the mechanics of crits. Really would like to see it stickied to help out other noobs like myself. I had no idea that once I lost armor on a section that there was a 42% chance for every shot to that section that crits between 1-3 hardpoints in that section of my mech. When you look at it that way, it starts to make sense why that giant 10 slot ac/20 gets blown out so quickly.

That post helps explain how to try to hide ammo and also how to insulate it by surrounding it with other things like double heat sinks so that non explosive things have a chance to crit instead of your ammo or weapons. Caused me to go through all my mech and shift things around to try to better avoid having appendages blown off.

Also like hauser said, me along with every other person in the group I run with target the right shoulder of atlas's first to remove its usually biggest threat first. (Unless of course the targeting info shows them running a specialized boat with little to no ballistic punch like a lrm atlas)

Exactly right.
