Like many others, I would love to see the Mauler in the game at some point. However, because of the 1:1 timeline, there are not enough Mauler variants available in 3050 to consider it as a candidate. There is an underlying issue that I've noticed so I'd just like to point it out while I'm here.

For one, I feel that restricting the game to a 1:1 timeline is impractical for the following reasons:
  • It limits the choices of 'mechs because certain variants are spread out over the timeline.
  • As a consequence of the above, if forces PGI to release 'mechs with similar weapons layouts; the Awesome and the Stalker for example.
  • It limits the amount of content PGI can release due to the timeline, equipment, weapons, other technology, etc.
  • It forces the developers to release clan content before it's ready.
  • Or it forces PGI into deadlines they cannot meet: delay clan invasion.
There is the option of creating variants but that may not be as widely accepted throughout the community. Though, they already seem to be starting that trend. Anyway, I know that went off topic but I just wanted to bring that to the surface.

Happy New Year.

I don't feel like the Mauler should be readily available to everyone as compared to the Banshee, due to tech2 production and fluff.

I can see that, but we have Atlas mechs and XL engines everywhere. So I don't know if limited technology really applies in MWO.

True but at least the Atlas has been in production for hundreds of years and made its rounds to all armies due to salvage and whatnot. Not to say I don't find the Mauler sexy and its potential loadouts fun

I just feel that giving the developers more freedom might help the growth of the game. I admit that the idea of limited tech and a 1:1 timeline is a really cool idea. But just really hard to pull off due to what I listed above.

Since when have they paid any attention to when which variant was released?

Same thing goes for the Highlander also. Not exactly as common as the Mauler in this era...Raven- pretty much a Capellan only mech,

The Mauler would be the most fun, and bring the most to the table in terms of play. It would be a Ballistic plus assault, but with the potential for specializing in other weapons loads, or a mixed loadout.

IN terms of fun, it would be the best assault. IMO.

It wouldn't hurt that the Mauler is also a very attracive mech, with a look similiar in some ways to the Warhammer or Archer. It would be useful for their marketing.

Plus it's Draconis manufactured, which makes it twice as good as anyone elses mech.

Mauler would be cool, but the Zeus would be better as far as assaults go, in my opionion

Zeus would be a weaker Orion...I'm not really against the Zeus, but in this game, the Mauler would certainly be a nastier opponent.

The Zeus is cool, but it's so similar to the Atlas. A ballistic assault would be pretty terrifying. The Mauler is pretty wide too so it's not without it's disadvantages.

I thought there was a list of guidelines somewhere.

Just look at the variants we have now; a solid quarter of them didn't come out until well into the Clan invasion.

1:1 timeline?

Just look at ECM. It can be argued that it includes Angle ECM tech wich is definitely not 3050.
But I think it's okay. PGI should follow the timeline loosely and adjust to max out the fun for us.

Also I've heard lots of arguments like: "But there is only one Mauler variant"
Hell yes IMHO there is also only one Stalker variant - and it is annoying. I'd rather have
PGI tweak them a bit more. Right now there is no diversity. So F*CK timeline and vote for FUN ;)

It's a great idea, but like you said, follow it loosely.

Which ones?
I see maybe just the Awesome 9M Atlas 7K, but that might not even be one

And as verybad proclaimed the Mauler as pride of the DCMS, I think I always wished it was a FedCom design ;)

But what would make me totally sold on it; just introduce it as the Daboku.

The 1 for 1 time line is OK. I just wish they started the time with open beta, and it was set a year ago. I would like to have at least one full year of community warfare before the clans invade.

I want players to be involved with the houses, with rivalries and some nail biting drama, That is drama about merc units flipping sides after contracts expire, or better pay. Merc units going head to head with rivals for months. House units taking handfulls of planets and defending them. I want all the players to be caught up in whats going on with Inner Sphere community warfare to the point that the clan invasion really does screw every thing up.

With the date in the game as it is now I just do not see that happening. All the players are just grinding until the clans show up. The game will mostly be clan vs IS with some exceptions.

I voted "other" for the 1:1 timeline. While I like the idea of trying to follow the timeline, delays are inevitable in gaming so it's not going to be easy to follow. Also it needlessly restricts big events.
