case (not sure if it contains gauss explosion, an experiment in progress)

It does, but... CASE only protects sections adjacent to the one it's in.

Since you're using an XL Engine, wouldn't the Gauss exploding destroy your side torso and thus kill you anyway?

Hey De La Fresniere. Not sure , I havn't gotten a straight answer from anyone yet, but I have lost my torso mounted gauss and not died. I credit this to case but have been too lazy to figure out the damage points vs internals. Any info you have would be great.

I'm afraid I don't remember the particulars. I seem to remember reading Gauss + CASE was useless but I really wouldn't know where to start to find the thread.

I think Gauss explodes for 20 damage. If that's the case (pun unintended), it could indeed blow up and not kill you instantly (LT has more than 20 internal hit points), though CASE wouldn't have been any help there.

I really wish there were some sort of official game mechanics guide. Technically we're still in beta and we can't reliably test these things without knowing all the details...

CASE prevents excess internal explosion damage from transferring to nearby sections. Here's an example:

if your AC20 ammo was in your RT and exploded for 100 points of damage it will first be applied to the RT's structure which lets say had 20 points of health. Your RT with or without CASE would be destroyed and 80 points of damage would remain. If you had CASE that damage would be nullified and not transfer. Without CASE it would transfer to your CT's structure and likely kill you. However if you were running an XL engine you would still die due to the RT being destroyed with or without CASE.

I myself almost never use CASE - it's simply easier to place ammo in locations that almost never get hit or are so disconnected from the rest of your mech that an explosion would not be too catastrophic. Usually RL/LL > RA/LA > HD > CT > RT/LT in that order.

EDIT: As an addendum I have not found the 20 point explosion of a Gauss Rifle to be an issue. Generally if you are taking critical hits to Gauss Rifles you'e on your way out anyway and surviving a 20 point internal explosion is quite possible.

I run various loadouts:-

4 x LL with either 350xl or 360xl (with ff) - runs hot but hits hard

4 x MPL SRM6 MG with 350xl or 360xl - this is one of my light hunters

4 x SL SRM6 AC2 with 360xl - my other main light hunter

4 x ML UAC5 SRM6 with 300xl - my slowest build at just under 90kph

4 x ML UAC5 SRM4 or SSRM2 with 325xl - this lacks ammo

4 x ML UAC5 with 325xl - my goto build
