Winter Forest Colony, piloting a Flame.
I was standing in the water on the south side of the northern clump of rocks and happened to look up at the sky. A beam of light turned into an opaque ribbon. As I looked up and down along its length it would get wider (moving the head down) and narrower (moving the head up). The color of the ribbon was more or less the same gray color as the sky, but was totally opaque. In game scale it was maybe half a meter wide outside my cockpit at its widest.

This may have been the "out of bounds" marker. Some of the in-game non-terrain functions do weird things.
