They can't go around making a practically new game and slap on Battletech dressing to it. We had that in the past and it didn't fare well with the fanbases.
The way that PGI is doing this seems like a fair compromise. They're using the TT rules as a basic starting point and adjusting it from there. Heck we're allowed AMS and ECM slots for specific chassis, but in the TT rules I could put damn near anything I want so long as the tonnage and crits fit.
If anything the current programming is limiting the gear heads out there, but they learned to like the adjustments and so far it is fun.
