AT 8:00 EST Nvidia introduced a new driver. though it says nothing about this game it makes a great deal of differences. reds are red green is green and the quality of the picture has greatly improved its in the 310 series but more advanced.

From the release notes:

•Updated NVIDIA Control Panel ambient occlusion support for Mechwarrrior Online

(Ambient occlusion attempts to approximate the way light radiates in real life, especially off what are normally considered non-reflective surfaces. -- From Wikipedia cause I didn't know myself)

I'm a 3D artist and work with it all the time, so I will attempt to explain (with an example). Ambient occlusion, as it works in 3D is actually the dark areas in recesses and between objects. The closer objects are together or the tighter the area, the less light bounces back and fourth and thus creates a "darkness" there. You would notice ambient occlusion in corners where a wall meets a floor or such as the space between your refrigerator doors. It's a subtle effect, but a very nice one for adding a touch more realism.

Here is a 3D model I made for a short animation... This first image is rendered without ambient occlusion:

It looks pretty good, but it lacking some of the subtle depth that ambient occlusion can provide.

This next image is a rendering of ONLY ambient occlusion from the same frame of animation:

That ambient occlusion pass shows only the dark areas where objects are close together. It's especially noticeable between cogs in the gears.

This third image is a composite of the above two images where only the dark areas of the ambient occlusion pass are affecting the other render:

Notice how this third image looks just a bit better than the first one and carries with it more depth in the recesses and places where objects are close together.

That's what ambient occlusion is and how it works... hopefully that helps you understand it a little better.

Clean install of new driver. No noticeable difference in FPS or image quality. *shrug* oh well.

If you go in and look at the settings, AO (Ambient Occlusion) is set to "OFF" for Mechwarrior by default. Also the Mechwarrior AO setting was actually added in a couple of driver versions ago, but for some reason it keeps making the update notes. They weren't optimizing the drivers for Mechwarrior Online in this driver. Some other games may see an improvement in FPS since they were optimized (forget which ones off the top of my head).

Thanks for the info.

I'm still using the driver before the previous one. For some reason the driver before this one created a huge slowdown issue in another game. And the "new" one didn't seem to actually do anything better.

I'm probably not gonna upgrade to this one right away... not unless it actually does something this time.

Jonny C that is awesome. is that what a clan members head looks like inside? Maybe they should hire you but in Canada they could not afford you. Perhaps it is because I am running a GTX 670 ? Could it effect only that series? I need a copy for my wall that says Congress at work.

At first I read this post and thought it must be me. Then I checked; first cup of coffee is already downrange and I have been up about an hour. Nope, it's not me.

Are there traffic lights in River City? Gosh, I never took the time to look at anything in the environment before

Ambient occlusion is not supported from MWO so this new driver changes nothing.

It's actually supposed to represent my brain (sort of). Here is the animation (best pre-loaded at 1080p):
