Best 4 Man Mech Composition?

In the 4 man groups I'm in, it's usually "use what you like", but I often wonder about the different pros and cons of different mech compositions. What has been your experience?

I usually play with 2 other friends. We run 2 Atlases and a Dragon. The Atlases are the damage dealers and soak up a lot of damage as well. The Dragon is usually our early scout. Once lines clash, it battles on the flanks trying to turn enemy mechs so the Atlases have open shots. The Dragon will also engage enemy lights and mediums. We try to call out targets and group fire.

For our 4th, we've had success with a Stalker LRM boat. ECM from one of the Atlases protects it while it rains destruction on the enemy. In those games, the Stalker pilot would score at least 1,000 points of damage.

Weakness of our composition seems to be mobility. If our base gets capped, usually only the Dragon is able to get back quickly. With that in mind, I usually like to play defensively and only push forward when we have an advantage.

We haven't experimented with Narc and Tag too much but want to experiment with it in the future.

What 4 man groups have you guys been having success with? Discuss! :D

Whenever playing non-8 man drops with FU guys, I don't really give a crap what any of my buddies bring. They aren't stupid, and for the most part know the limitations of their rides.

I am more concerned about figuring out what our PUG teammates are driving so I can accurately estimate what the enemy team composition is. At this point, the best teammates are medium mechs, so the enemy gets the worst blend of firepower and speed on their team.

When you're dropping in 4-mans, you're often going up against new players in trial mechs or who have well under 100 games under their belts. I don't know about you guys, but I've played over 1500 games, and there are guys in my corp who have played way more than that.

4 mans are already easy enough without bringing out your "tryhard" builds.

While pugging the most effective 4-mans that I've seen fall into two catergories.

Heavy brawlers - usually one ecm atlas and 2-3 stalkers.
LRM boats with a good ecm scout with TAG. Puggers aren't used to LRM boats anymore (although they are sneaking back in over the past week or so) and a team of LRM'ers confuses the hell out of most pugs.

we normally go with 2 assaults (atm a DDC to take heat, with a stalker murdering everyone) with 2 3Ls.

that being said, i don't think we've ever purposefully run a specific build outside of 8mans. 4mans are beer and crisps time while waiting for more people to get on.

Just bring mechs that can work together and are in general better than your opponent and you're set.

F.ex. 4 lights with ecm and streaks.
DDC + other heavies and mediums.

I usually just run whatever I feel like piloting or anything I'm leveling when doing the 4-man groups.

If there were 4 of me piloting this here 3L we'd surely defeat all opposition.

no fun mode: 2x streakmando +2x AC/20 cat/streakcats.
TAG scout +missleboats
atlas stacking.

pub tears mode on: if you need cheese to win as a premade then you're twice as bad as other pubstomps.

I'm not even a good pilot, and when I drive a 3L in PUG matches it's like god mode.

A raven 3l and three 100 kph brawling dragons. Very powerful when it slams into your flank.

I saw a 3man of 3x LRM15 Atlai once in a PUG game (they may have had a TAG scout with them for a 4th, didn't confirm), they all had their team colorscheme too, no doubt they were a premade.
I personally took great pleasure in running up their flank and blowing the LT off of 2 of them (one had an XL as well, and was cursing me for the rest of the match).
Most useless pre-made I have ever seen, given how none of them were watching their flank/rear.

Beer and crisps (what is a crisp? a potato chip?) means dragon time. Preferably 4 for the most hilarious effect
