Battletech is really set in the dark ages. After the fall of the roman empire, west europe erupts in an age of chaos and war as factions fight to pick up the pieces of the roman empire. All the while, the ruins of the once great empire could be seen. Roman engineering and technology become forgotten. Because people no longer knew how to build aqueducs, dirty water resulted in decades of disease. During the dark ages, Vikings terrorize the european's northern shores with impunity due to superior sea fairing technology. Eventually to be defeated and driven back while some assimilated into european society.

Roman Empire = Star League
Vikings = Clan

Battletech lore borrows heavily from history which explains why it is so believable and immersive

Just glue some cows to the feet of a Commando..boom..instant hobbits!

And yes, the lore of BTech is very much based on what the OP said, they just went more global in their factions, with a nice mix of Asian as well as European factions. Not so sure about the Clans being Vikings..more like the Mongol Hordes really.

Battletech lore is realistic as your suspension of disbelief. Like all game worlds things just happen to facilitate the story-line.

The inner sphere always struck me as very Napoleonic

Think that would pass as the psycho Gollum.

We needs this, and the precious will be ours.

But on topic, I think every game has a link to some part of history. Whether directly or indirectly.

If you're going to draw a parallell to history, I would suggest the Romans actually be the clans. The Inner sphere would represent Alexander's empire after his death, when his generals battled for control over what he had conquered.

You're right, but I wonder if you're just guessing this, or you actually saw the stuff from jordan w. laying this all out.

The BT story indeed was based off of the fall of rome/descent into the dark ages.

Or, more likely, like many of us with a bit of basic global history in our educations, he saw this on his own? The great and glorious days of the Star League, how it gathered all of the Inner Sphere into it's mighty empire and there was a golden age. And then it all went sour and fell apart, the squabbling started, the dark ages happened, the loss of so much science and art and culture. Then the Invaders from Outside(he thinks Vikings, I think Mongols) coming along...

Yeah, you're right, NO WAY anyone could see that on their own..

Jordan W is the guy who's created with creating the BTech universe's story and the histories, etc. And he's been asked about the relationship you saw and admitted that that is exactly what it appears to be, he used history to create fictional history :) He also mixes in some of the King Arthur/Camelot stuff among others with his detailed storylines for the great houses and the major powers that be. And it's been freely admitted that the Clans were based in part upon a certain nutjob's principles of ubermensch and the eugenics program the Clans use for their Warrior Caste, along with other influences driving the Clans..the Camelot story coming full swing with their return and what they are supposed to be seeking, the return of the Star League in all it's glory. It's a very complicated and alive universe with timeless epic tales.
