Hit detection was because of Cryengine memory leak fixes that were holding back packets. I read it yesterday from Matthew whatever the Technical Director, I'm sure you can find it, but it was buried in a thread somewhere. I haven't heard anything about paper-thin armor but probably it's because people can actually land hits on lights better now if I had to guess.

Thanks, I found it here:

That thread should really be sticked for all the people spinning the rumor wheel...

Armor just seems thinner to people now that their lagshields have diminished.

If you look at the post it is a little more complex than that, but yea that is the crux of the issue.

The problem is I have seen posts with wild speculation about:
  • Armor values being less
  • Speeds being slower
  • Multiple weapons doing correct damage when fired together (there was speculation about a bug like this last week)
  • netcode fixes
  • Onyxia breathing more often...

When in reality is is a client/serverside Cryengine memory fix.

It is a great thing, just need to spread the truth on this, which is why I suggested a sticky.

Who, or what, is an Onyxia?

I looked on Sarna, but I could not find anything...so I Googled it.

Apparently, Onyxia is an NPC dragon in WOW.

that is one I was wondering about. As it does feel like I am slower. Not a big deal mind you just a need to adjust my rhythm.

Really guys? Now I feel old.. Onyxia was the first 40man boss in WOW (also where the LEEERRROOOOYY JENKINS video came from).

Her breath attack was pretty crazy and I guess there was lots of speculation about the attack patterns.

It's a WoW joke: After many of the original patches, people would complain that one of the bosses did a devastating special attack more often. Nothing actually changed, it was just a random chance, but it was such a common misperception that it became a meme for baseless anecdotal patch changes.

LEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRROOOOOOOOOOYYYYYYYYYYYYY didn't come from Onyxia, by the way.

And it honestly didn't matter when she was going to breath because you shouldn't be in the way of where the breath was going to go in the first place. The room was basically divided into six points like a hexagram and she would do her breath to the opposite corner.

I merged the two topics together asking for clarification on the 'general bug fixes' in the Patch notes.

This, Im shocked that people don't know the meme. A lot of the people I know who never played wow had it explained at one time or another.

My point was that the Dev explanations for this patch are important enough, and the speculation is rampant enough, that a sticky might be warranted.

Yes sadly the 4 fps issue is still out there to be caught (still high priority), the cleanup work obviously has the joint benefit of reducing things that it could be while also increasing overall stability. What I'm working on currently is actually low level tools for tracking memory leaks that shouldn't only catch any outstanding memory leaks but ensure we don't incur them in the future (should be rapidly caught in test by the reports that get generated).

There's also more performance fixes coming that address likely culprits e.g. looking at lots of Mechs was incurring high animation costs, work has been done to lower these and we'll continue to monitor for the issue. There's also ongoing work on continuing to improve profiling data such that we can better catch this and similar issues. We had some reports from the community of expected ways to get it to happen faster (running windows XP, less physical RAM etc.) but none have panned out so far.

We'll keep narrowing it down though until it's resolved.

For me when the 4 fps bug first hits, it is always on river city nights. It will continue of course on other maps until I restart the client, but that map seems to always be the intial starter when it does happen. From what i've noticed it seems to be related to the various smoke and fires that are prolific on that map, I can actually get a somewhat decent 10-20 fps when the bug has happened IF I look to the outside edges of the map away from any of the smoke/fire. Since maps are random, I can't specifically run river city nights to see if that causes the 4 fps issue to happen sooner or not. Possibly something with the fire/smoke effects that aren't clearing properly from vram?

I REALLY like, I mean really, like this thread. I know that not everyone is technical enough to understand exactly what's going on (nor do I claim to be a technical expert, but I do definitely understand what's going on in this thread so far), but this is really interesting to me and I appreciate the time taken to answer direct questions and to elaborate on specifics.

Thanks!!
