Tried a bunch of different configurations with the Spider today.

Probably the most viable one I've found was

1 LL (CT)
2 ML (RA)
Endo
Ferro
10 DHS
4JJ
255XL
ECM
~195/204 armour.

Notes: Good damage output... for a Spider, and the mobility to duke it out.

Good technique to master with it is the jump turn shoot; shoot mech as you approach. Jump and turn as you run past, land shoot lasers, then run towards and past mech again and repeat.

I've found 8JJ to be highly amusing but largely useless in practical terms. The extra height can help you get from Theta to the rest of the map in Snow Valley... but other than that, you're sacrificing too much for your tiny mech to justify the extra amusment factor.

Also managed to cram 2LL into the Spider's Arm.

210XL
Endo
Ferro
2 LL
1 ML
0 JJ

Note: Sacrifice speed and mobility for Sniper supermacy. But it means you actually have an effective punch and enough speed to reposition as required.

Share your good Spider 5D builds and comments on the ones tried here.

I'm trying out a harassment sniper 5D; turns out it's fairly hard to land then stay on top of buildings and rock formations that you normally can't access by foot.

I have been working on a support build I'd like to try. Especially now that the new reward system actually rewards team work well.

Basically a spotter/harasser mix. Has anyone tried anything like this? I am debating whether or not to actually spend the money on it. Thanks in advance.

This is my favorite and most effective build for PUGs:
http://mwo.smurfy-ne...acaf6a61a109a16
Strategy: Get behind the enemy team asap at try to find a reliable cover. Give targets for your team. Shot alphastrikes once or twice on slow assaults' RCT to make them turn and lose precious time looking for you. When the teams engage, look for LRM boats and long range fire supports and fry their back armor to death. The ERLL will give your position, so be wise and change cover if the enemy starts firing back. Avoid trading. Hunt down fleeing mechs. Be aware of light mechs and hunters: you are not a brawler.

And this is a build better suited for a spotter in group queue:
http://mwo.smurfy-ne...2326386638f2c8d
Strategy: Fast forward ahead to scout and relay enemy movement/positions. Stand nearby giving ECM cover as the team assembly and get in position. Look out for lights, try to avoid them and go flank the heavier mechs. Tag them, PPC fire cancel ECM cover, so tagging is even faster. Keep an eye for smoking components and rip them off. If needed you can knife fight with you med pulse + ppc, but only use this option in last case. You can also swap the Med Pulse for a Medium Laser/Light Pulse and add more armor/JJ to your taste.

I run something similar as a harasser 3mpl xl240 BAP, ecm no ams though. I have been very tempted to throw a tag on there like you have because it is rewarded so well now. I have also been tempted to go back to the XL 255 erppc and tag build I used to run. It is nice because the erppc and tag ranges coincide well with each other and if you wait to fire the ppc until the enemy is getting hit by missiles there is a good chance he won't see where you are.

Yesterday i put a 5D to good use in a group queue with ERPPC+2SPL+ECM+XL255+3JJ, since we had no dedicate LRM boat i've dropped the TAG. Had a funny match at Tourmaline where i ended 4/2 with only 125 damage :D

I totally agree, I switched from the erllas to the 3mpl because I like to be more "personally invested" in my "work"

Also, I am trying to decide if it is worth spending all of my cbills and fill all my remaining mechbays to complete my locust collection all in one fell swoop or just keep adding to them over time :) (I guess I also need to pick up mc for the pb&j too. And mc is on sale . . . Hmmmmm)
