Ok I love my light mechs and I always try and find the enemy for my team so I skirt behind them and spot for my team but I only get the spotting message rarely even though I may spot 6 or 7 mechs.
So is it working or do I need to look at them longer?

If I recall they changes the spotting rules that a friendly has to actively damage the enemy while you are targeting them for you to get the bonus.

It was frustrating a lot of folk when scouts would quickly tab through enemies to get XP and making support fire impossible as they would lose lock just after they fire missiles

As Felix said you have to get your team to damage the target you are spotting. You can receive this bonus once per enemy mech per match. Same goes for the TAG/NARC bonus.
