My first impulse was to troll, however I decided against being a *********. Let's look at pros and cons:
Pros
  • fastest mech
  • highest jj capacity (12)
  • 3 module slots
Cons
  • only 2 laser hardpoints (no more than 2 mplasers in CT)
This means you are agile, but carry minimal armaments. I have two suggestions: recon/scout or harasser.

Recon/scout
  • weapons: TAG and 1 mlaser/mplaser.
  • equipment: 12 JJ, BAP
  • modules: Sensor Range 2, Target Info, Taget delay 2
  • goal: get high and keep your eyes and TAG on the targets.
  • Note: No AMS, you can outrun most missiles, AMS would only give away your location
Harasser
  • weapons: 2 mlaser/mplaser.
  • equipment: 12 JJ, BAP
  • modules: Sensor Range 2, 360 Target, Capture Accelerator
  • goal: Take pot shots at enemy while they're engaged with your team; break up enemy lines (cause chaos and get enemies to chase you); burn enemy base to distract them
  • Note: No AMS, you can outrun most missiles, AMS would only give away your location

The problem with this is that the V is a horrible scout for the way you set it up because you can't get the center torso anywhere near targets to hit with a TAG if you go high. The D is much better at this with it's arm mounted TAG as you can hide above the cave opening in frozen city and tag everyone outside and inside it (while also having ECM to avoid them getting a target lock without tracking your TAG laser beam).

Jump really high, stay away from ssrm ravens/commandos, make sure you drop with somebody who can kill light mechs if you want to survive more then 10% of your games whilst actually shooting a couple of times at enemy mechs.

Before the changes in how ranking is done. Lights did have a place. You still get C-bills for spotting and assists but that is not part of the ranking now. It is all about damage and kills. That is the ranking. They cater to assualts and heavies for ranking purposes. A good scout would find out targets and report back. Plus exposing targets with tag that are covered by ECM. Nothing worse then the main party heading the wrong direction or miss a chance to ambush targets. I remember the day when I looked at the ranking at the end and was suprised. 1 kill and 47 damage outranked 6 assists and 500 damage. They say ranking is done by how much xp is earned..... This game is nothing like it was 2 months ago. Still havent addressed the net coding issue. Rather cater to it and thrive on it. New light mechs with a new light hero coming out. I would think netcoding was the most important part to fix coming out with all the lights but then I relized it helps the lights how netcoding is at its current state. In MWO...Lights are the tanks.

Currently, mechs in MWO cannot angle to fire directly above them.

Signature jedi move of the Spider seems to be jumping from behind a target, headshotting them, spinning & landing behind or above them.

Also, had one last night that was good at getting up into nooks & crannies outside of my SSRM lock & other weapons radius. Timer ran out before our team could reposition to relocate them.

Hmm, so far I've seen the following:

1- Dies spectacularly
2- Jumps really high
3- Very fast

First thing that pops into my mind as your job is "clay pigeon" :)

.....

Wait... dammit, now I need to go buy a mech that can mount an LB-10X :D

It's a target drone. Like pop up targets on a rifle range.

So I bought the spider 5V but im not sure how to play it. What is my job with this variant of the spider?
I could use some suggestions for builds too.

Your role is to make me angry.

Quck edition:
loadup per mech build in this thread. xl255, ff, endo, 12jjs, etc. Run 2medium pulse lasers. Never stop moving and harrass, harrass, harrass. Jump from ledge to ledge. watch enemy loadouts carefully. If you see ssrms, back off or run. ecm streak light? jump in the air high as possible when crit and yell "bonzai!!!" and pop in a heroic display of fireworks.

If you have a competent team, you can easily 150+ damage with assists, Most fun Ive had since I got the hang of the game.

Ever watched a group try to figure out why they are getting LRMed through ECM? I jumped on top of a smaller building above their group and flipped to counter. You don't need LOS for ECM counter to work

You can make a good spotter and harassment sniper with the spider.

ER large laser, TAG, and ECM. Put in an XL engine for more speed.

If you equip the ERLL you cannot have any other weapon or targeting system in the 5V. No crit slots/weapon slots left. This post was about the 5V - so ECM is not on the table.

I am thinking of getting rid of the spider. The only thing I seem to be able to do with it effectively is get killed.

My 5V's role was to frustrate me more than any other mech match after match until I sold it in disgust.

If ever a mech needed severe buffs/changes, it is the Spider. I don't know how/why they made it through testing like they did. Unless the whole idea was to make a useless light nobody would ever willingly pilot.

Maybe if ECM and streaks ever get rebalanced it will find a place, but until then save your money and mechbays.

Think of it this way. At least its not the 5K which is completely useless in every conceivable way until they decide to make MG's not a massive pile of fail. With its 4 (useless) ballistic hard points it effectively has only a single energy hardpoint to make use of makin it a 10 ton lighter version of the already useless Cicada 3C but with jumpjets. Sadly it has the smallest amount of jump jets of any of the variants further cementin its uselessness.

On the plus side, the Spider 5K has officially taken the spot of most useless mech variant in the game. Given the track record for trial mechs, get ready to see it as the next light mech to pilot.

Note, the proposed crit buff still makes them a massive pile of fail.

I don't know man. When talking about uselessness, what do you think is worse? A jumpjet capable mech with an AC2 to plink away with from some rooftop a mile away, or an even jumpier mech with 2xMLAS to try and "harass" assaults and heavies? Which would you be sadder to see on your team?

This is a war for the bottom of the barrel.

Might be ok in Pub in hands of highly capable pilot with like 2ML+max JJ and you roll conquest... ok yeah, I think it would be easier to just roll a mech that doesn't suck.

The spider wont be viable till streaks are nerfed (1 lock = 1 shot imo) till than use it to save up money to buy a missile hardpoint light (raven 3l or commando 2d prefered b/c of ECM)

At least the 2 MLAS one isn't horribly ammo constricted like the AC/2 one.

Unless the AC/2 spider has **** all for either armor or engine it wont be able to fit enough ammo to even make a minor dent in the opponents.

To all those people who are constantly totting that SSRMs are too powerful and that it's impossible to be a light mech pilot without both ECM and SSRMs => Ever notice that none of the mechs that can equip both ECM AND SSRMs have any jump Jets?

I haven't tried the Spider yet, I'm working on my 3 Jenners at the moment because until just recently Jenners had the best Jump Jet capabilities as well as speed. I have been LOVING all the things I can do with Jump Jets EVEN THOUGH I still really miss the directional JJs of the old games; and I keep learning new and more fun uses for Jump Jets that give me that little extra edge in battle too! I can only imagine how much better it would work with the Spider.
