I love playing dragons, cataphracts, and the occasional catapult and centurion. But I have to admit that I've found I'm most effective and useful in a spider of all things. Not only does it scout and spot targets well, but it can be vicious in a fight. My best game has been over 500 points damage and 4 kills in a spider. I've had several games of "cleaning up" and evening the score a bit when we are on the losing side of a close game.

I think it has a lot to do with PUG gaming without teamspeak. The spider can level the playing field significantly for a noncoordinated team. For example, I routinely locate the bulk of the enemy group while undetected under ECM cover from range. Rather than give up my position and open up firing, I just spy on the enemy movement allowing my PUG team to mobilize and coordinate a team game plan or attack, i.e. exactly what teams do. It is notable advantage for a team to know exactly where the enemy is before they engage rather than just stumbling into one of them to start the engagement. Also, the spider is very mobile and can cover the map to go where it can have the most decisive leverage like other light mechs. I think the combo of ecm, speed, and working jump jets make it the best scout and spotter/tagger.

In my one favourite mech, I am an excellent fighter. I never fail to end matches with multiple kills to my name and lots of damage, win or lose. I almost always drop in as a lone wolf. Once in a very rare while, I play with a friend.

But I sold all my mechs and got back to basics (for roleplaying-ish reasons) with the 'default' Commando 2D on Sunday. Nothing fancy. Stock weapon configuration. Later on after many games I trimmed some weight by using an XL engine to add ECM and a ton of ammo. And I have been winning the great majority of my games, which surprises me as I'm a much, much worse fighter in it. edit: MUCH worse. It deserves emphasis.

I'm not sure where the improvement is coming from. Perhaps from picking on light mechs, freeing up our heavier ones to fight bigger targets? Perhaps just having ECM blanketing my own team? Small size and vulnerability making me less likely to take risks and more likely to be a buddy? I'm not sure. But it's working, which is a nice bonus while you're learning something new.

If my side has a good LRM mech the C-P3O Commando for the win ;)

You should make "Anything with ECM" an option. ;)

Really, there's no other Cicada vote?

I run an XL300 cicada and I normally disrupt atlas and other artillery/"stay in the back" mechs. Because I'm not a commando/jenner/raven, people who would normally ignore them will come after me because they believe they can get me.

edit: I'm aware that the Cicada is not the best mech, but I play it anyway because I think it is fun and cool. Also, I'm just waiting for the MGs buff so I can pull out my Cicada 3C

Well, there's only one mech I bring to 8mans (since I don't own any ECM chassis): dual-gauss CTF-4X.
The other two cataphracts I own have a good mix of mobility and firepower that allows me to help the team out without having any glaring weaknesses.

It changes for me.
If the PUGs are having a "someone else is going to run ECM" kinda night then my Cicada becomes our missle shield.
But when ECM is happening spontaneously I can contribute to the killing way better in one of my Cataphracts.

Well... my Hunchies let me skirmish and flank and provide light fire support, my Stalkers and Atlas let me brawl and devastate the enemy with heavy damage at various ranges, and I'm finding the Awesome can provide a lovely direct-fire platform for area denial. It really depends on which role I'm filling that day.

games are more lost than won. what i mean is, the worst players are often the ones who tip the balance more, rather than players who are good (or mechload out in general). if all players are roughly equal in skill, then it comes down to who has more streaks

I seem to do best when in the c1,k2 or c4. Lights I tend to just bounce and spray fire everywhere trying to keep track of 12 moving mech and terrain changes is tough for me. Hks and atli are just slow moving targets. The cats have the right mix of speed and fire power plus i don't feel like I'm a huge slow walking target.

I love using lrms on the founder cat so when I pug those rare matches where my side knows how to counter/spot I can do some great damage. If they start to get rolled in a brawl I'll try charging in with the med lasers. The k2 I use ballistics opting for an ac10/ac20 or dual lbx combo. Lasers and ppcs just run it too hot even with dhs, endo etc. The c4 I went with srms6s. I must have fought a new atlas pilot first time with this load out because it didn't return fire or try evading. I did two alphas and it went down.

I've done the founder hk with 2mgs and 2 large lasers for lol. I got killed lots due to annoying heavies with it and they thought I had something like the ac20 or its gun shoulder is just a nice red shoot me here sign.

Since I've been at Atlas pilot since about 1987... I'd have to go with that chassis. I might be better if I had my beloved Kodiak ;)

Stalker.

Slow as molasses, not much torso twist, slow torso twist, not much arm movement.
Perfect for an inept player like me. Reduces confusion and load on the cerebrum.

The only problem ... no ballistics.

Stalker, cause I can use a pair of LRM racks and PPCs or LLs at range and then follow up with SRMs and/or medium lasers up close. I often mount a TAG as well for a well rounded damage dealing powerhouse best served with Atlai or Cataphracts

I love my 9m. Its fast, can take a serious beating and can place 62 points of damage more or less right where I want it. It isn't much use against lights, but anything else will have serious problems. I just need to reign in my enthusiasm sometimes.
