The Greatest Thing A New Player Can Do For His Team-

I don't care if your not doing any damage, or just firing off a shot every once in a while. The key to winning is simply not dying. All too often I see my teammates run over hills by themselves, into groups of 3+ enemies, and get mowed down without doing any damage and without helping their team. You are MUCH better off hiding behind a building until the battle starts, then engaging a target thats already busy.
Happened to me at least twice tonight; losing my 4 pug players (when I'm in a 4 man premade) makes it very hard for us to win. All we ask is that you don't die. You may think, that gee, its boring waiting for the shooting to start... I want to be the aggressor. That is a role best left to experienced players who know the maps very well, and know the capabilities of their mechs to withstand damage. I'll poke and make advances for cover, sure, but I sure as hell won't charge the enemy by myself. The game is about surviving as you get into position to strike, then gutting the enemy before he can do anything.
Just live long enough, and you'll see its a lot more fun.

When they do engage (as ZRaven said) watch to see what they are shooting at and attack the same target to focus fire and take the opponent out quicker. Dead things don't shoot back, wounded's usually can.

My mechs, tend not to be straight-up killers, they fall more into striker, harrasser types,(cicadas, dragons etc.). I rarley get kills but, I felt bad that my machines were not doing the damage that the other players were laying down so, I would charge headlong into the fray, hoping to score kills. This usually meant that I would get to see the end screen via spectator mode. I think I like the live until the end way over the die in the first contact way.

That helps, but I'd rather have a new guy in a centurion behind a building waiting for an enemy to be vulnerable than a D-DC w/ ECM charging over a hill to die instantly.
Or in an ECM raven, thinking he's invulnerable, being swarmed and again instantly killed.

"Where to?" "Who do we focus?" "What should I do" "Where should I go?" "Plan?"
All these things are important to ask, and listening to a veteran player and following their suggestions will do wonders for your team and your stats.

Definitely, but you'd be surprised how infrequently anyone types anything game-related in team chat. Generally the chat is used to boast about sexual conquest over the opposition's mothers.

I start every game by doing 3 things:
1. Saying "good hunting" in all chat
2. Taking command
3. Start making suggestions, asking what kinds of loadouts we have etc etc
And it usually works. I think tons of people are just waiting for someone to step up and start talking, planning and leading.

This made me laugh a lot harder than it should have...
