Depends how you want to play it.

Probably Gauss>AC20>ERPPC>PPC

But that is entirely subjective, and all 4 work well.

If you want a sniper, make a Phract.

Otherwise, have at it and make an AC20cat

It's going to sound like a cop-out, but whatever you are most comfortable with.

I've heard of people getting good results from quad PPC designs, but I'd make the torso PPCs ER versions, just because it's nice to have something to fight back with at point blank, even if your arms have been blown off.

Between the AC20 and Gauss boats, I'd go with the Gauss. Better range, plus it leaves you enough crits to drop in an XL engine so you can mount better armor and a couple secondary energy weapons (a pair of medium lasers in the arms, because being able to shoot up or down hill is nice).

I prefer THIS. It isn't flashy, but it works.

I like my 2x UltraAC5 4x MLAS, more mobile & more range than an ac-20 cat, more survivable that the gauss.

Neither of them are best. The best is the Quadapult: 4 LLAS. Excellent Mech at any range! I've only played it for about 200k XP now. It also has a lot less cheese than those other builds.

there is also 4xLL which is quite effective if you're the type who wants to fight at any range

Then 2x AC20

Tough to beat that for mid/low range high damage burst.

Granted, but 2 AC20 give you 40 burst damage. 4 LLAS give you 36 damage per shot, without any ammo limitations and much greater pinpoint accuracy. Also, higher optimal range.

I just switched my K2 from 4MLAS, 2AC20's, to a 2MLAS, and 2 GAUSS. I enjoy both heavily but the range on the gauss cant be beat especially with the new map Alpine.

On top of that I fit my gauss cat with a XL280 and I'm pretty mobile which helps tremendously for those moments when lights decide to nibble at your ankles. My AC20 cat was slow as hell (49.8kph i think) and absolutely blew *** cheese at range. Crazy fun though if you can just stick with another assault class.

I think my next mech is gonna be a gausskitty. The build I'm looking at has most of the armor and medium lasers in the ears, but can still do ~70 KPH without the speed tweak. Fast(er)/midrange/fragile will be a nice change of pace from the Atlas. Any seasoned Catapult pilots have recommendations for keeping the thing alive? Is 70 KPH too slow?

4x LL is a solid build, and great if you don't want to be "cheesy".

I used to use my K2 with LLx4, but switched out to two AC/10's and MLx2. My Dragon 1C inherited the LLx4 load out, as It runs fasssstttttt.

I'd like to see a link to this build if possible. I was struggling with trying to get 2 gauss's, a couple med lasers as backups, max armor, and going 70kph without speed tweak? I settled with about 352 armor just so I could fit everything in my last post.

Mine goes a hair under 70kph but I had to sacrifice armor to fit the engine and about 5 tons of ammo.

You'll do fine. I manage with 71.3 kph w/speed tweak. You can't really keep up with the lights or most of the mediums, but you fit in just fine with the big boys.

So you manage that heat. No big deal! Go for ballistics if your style is spamming shots everywhere while praying that they hit, or if you expect to die before your ammo runs out, I suppose. But if you plan to carry your team, go for longevity and choose energy weapons. The style of play is definitely different: With lasers, you don't go charging in blindly - you peek out of cover and take precise shots at damaged enemy side torsos to explode their ammo or XL engines. I'd say it requires more thoughtful action and tactical skill than going for pure damage and raw aiming skill as you would with e.g. a Gausscat.
