Ok, I have the game installed and working. It's all patched and everything.

I cannot seem to find any arenas or areas that are simply for training...by training I mean getting a feel for the controls and how stuff works ect.

I was able to get into what I thought was a training area, but it looked like an actual match. Since I am brand spanking new to this game, I did not want to waste the other player's time by stumbling around and testing stuff when they had a match to win. So I exited before it started.

So am I missing something? Is there an area that will let me actually train, or do I just need to wing it in an actual match?

No, you're not missing anything- there is no training area, no arena, and no private matches. no AI, no bots, no single player.

A training area is planned but not yet implemented. Until then, you'll have to learn the hard way. You will have to "waste the other players' time" by wandering around being a rookie, as unfortunately you have no other option. (note that this is true for all the other pilots! We all had to start somewhere)

Stick to your team, fire on what they fire on, try to aim for getting as many assists as you can.

Watch lots of youtube videos of players who know what they're doing. Check out NGNG http://www.youtube.c...oGutsNoGalaxyTV

Ok, thanks.

I am not so much worried about myself as annoying other players. But I guess they are used to it if this is how all new players start.

Any suggestions on how I can prepare? Is there current tutorial on things like basic movement/aiming and keybindings? (oops...just saw your links...I will look at that first)

Are you expected to have teamspeak or is that still considered just an option?

Teamspeak is optional, but a good option. Look into some of the unofficial servers, and let people know that you are a new guy looking to join a casual group. You should easily find other players that are more tolerant of your learning, and they will actually be able to help.

Teamspeak is always optional. note that for players playing in 4-man groups (groups must be 1-4, or a full 8), they already "expect" the other 4 players on their team to be non-VOIP PUGS. Mny players who often play in groups will still play as a non-grouped pug at times as well.

If they do issue orders, it's typically beneficial to follow them (but not all orders are good orders)

Grouped or not grouped, stick to your team.

Ah, ok. I will get into teamspeak eventually. But I am used to keyboard chat from other MMOs.

Also:

No back armor in this game huh? Everything is torso?

I saw 4 mechs when I played the game, when I was setting up before the match...are basic models free and we just use CBills or whatever for upgrades? Or do we just start with 4 free mechs? Or did I accidentally purchase that mech when I started the match?

Every mech has three rear torso sections (center rear, left rear, right rear). They have much less armor than the front.

you start with 4 free Trial mechs that you cannot customize. These are basically 'rentals'. They will change about once a month to four different mechs.

Once you've earned a few million C-bills you can buy your own mech, and then you can customize it, buy a bigger engine, buy upgrades like DHS, etc etc

Really? The tutorial video made it look like the entire torso was one big unit...I did not see a display for rear armor in the video HUD.

I am relieved to hear that though. One of the reasons I like this game is that it is so true to the original Table game.

Ok...your description of the trial mech's is a lot more clear than the Game's description. Basically I am just borrowing these till I can buy a "real" one. They are not really mine. That clears up a lot.

How permanent is the damage in this game? Does weapon damage carry over between matches? Can you lose stuff (permanently) by getting blown up?

you have front left, front center, front right, rear left, rear center, rear right. for center/left/right there is only one internal, but both a front and rear armor facing.

We used to have to repair between matches. That was removed. So for now, no, nothing is ever permanently damaged and nothing needs to be repaired or reloaded.

I see people with "founder" tags in the forum...does that mean a premium member?

I didn't see an option for a monthly subscription (which I assumed would be premium), just a credit based system. Does MWO have such an option? I do not see it on the site.

Ah...so it is the same thing. It is just not on auto-pilot as a recurring charge like with other MMOs...I have to buy separately every month or whenever.

So what is the deal with the Founder tags?

Ok...so there is no longer any way to become a founder. It was a one-time thing.

I actually wanted to do it in the beginning, but did not have a PC capable of running the game till now. So all I could do was register to reserve my name.

The founders program ran during the closed beta of this game. It gave you instant access to the beta, and depending on what level package you bought, ingame currency (c-bills), real money currency (mech credits) and premium time (gives you and income boost for c-bills and xp) in various amounts. The elite and legendary ones also gave you founders mechs, which were regular mech varients but with special paint and an income boost permantly attatched to them. The founders program ended October 14th, so you can no longer get the founders mechs, but you can buy premium time with mech credits, and you obviously don't need access to the beta anymore.

Welcome to MWO! Don't worry about jumping into a match and having at it. Usually at least a couple people each game are pretty green. I really, really recommend getting on mic and voice chatting. It really improves the game so much. There are no monthly options, it's free to play, with money getting you either c-bill boosts, special variant mechs (they aren't better, just different, but they do have exclusive paint-schemes), and visual bobbles. I may be off the mark here, but I'm pretty sure the founders are the people who were here from closed Beta and who put money directly towords the games developement (someone confirm that one for me).

There's no way to be a founder, but the hero mechs (the variants you buy with MC only) are close. The big thing with the Founder's Program was that you get a nifty tag, and depending on how much you spent you'd get up to 4 Founder's Mechs. The mech options were hunchback, catapult, jenner and atlas, and all they do is give a bonus to experience and c-bills earned, and they have a special paint job.

Edit: mistake on my part

You "Could" get a training ground in the game's current state. It requires 16 players. With two groups of 8, set on the same game mode, you can count down and launch at the same time, likely winding up in the same match. This, unfortunately, is the closest you can get to a training ground.

I use this method to train and test as well as explore.

Founders Mechs give no extra XP.
Founders Mechs give a 25% C-Bill Bonus.
Hero Mechs give a 30% C-Bill Bonus.
C-Bill = ingame money used to buy non-Hero Mechs, Armament, Equipment, Upgrades and some of the basic custom colours.

Couldn't remember if this was true or not. Last time I played my Founder's mech was back during the glorious days of free premium time.
