Can someone please give me proven and complete instructions on how to change my resolution to 800X600? I know there are more steps involved than just changing the attributes file. Thanks.

Not sure how to do it, but I'm curious about your reasons for wanting to do so. Are you trying to improve performance?

This is pretty easy to do. Here are the steps:
1) Go to C:\Games\Piranha Games\MechWarrior Online\USER\Profiles\[your profile name]
2) Right-click the "attributes.xml" file and select "edit"
3) Find this line <Attr name="OptionCfg.r_Height" value="500"/> and change the number value to 500 (I'm sure 600 works to switch it but I've always done 500 - I think because I read it somewhere...I started doing this in closed beta)
4) Next find this line <Attr name="OptionCfg.r_Width" value="800"/> and change the number to 800
5) Save the file and exit out of everything
This will make your game play ing 800x600 resolution but you if you change any of the graphics settings in the in-game menu it will revert back to 1024x768 and you'll have to do it all over again. Only issue with this resolution is that it makes reading text difficult.
I learned how to do this in the closed beta because I wanted to have over 30 FPS on my laptop. My laptop is made for everything but gaming and so I need to have the resolution ultra-low in order for it to be playable for me. Feel free to PM if you have any questions.

I believe there is a way to force the position and window size of the client by editing the Target path of the shortcut to the client. This needs to have been supported in the client, though.
I had a problem running HomeWorld 2 which caused the full-screen application to cut off very important buttons (like "Save Config" or "Quit") so i couldn't readjust the resolution. I was able to remedy this by sending command line arguments via the Shortcut Target like -width, -height, -xpos, -ypos....
I am unaware if the MWO client supports any of these things. Doing some google research just now left me mostly frustrated, so...delve at your own risk!
