The cryengine 3 SDK is freeware for non-commercial use. Build maps, judge maps, winning maps get included and PGI pays appropriate license fee to Crytek.

Quantity, definitely. We're supposed to be getting community warfare, complete with planetary dominations. How can we really take that seriously if hundreds of planets are entirely identical?

Here's how I see it: terrain isn't always balanced and easily accessible. In fact, realistically, we should see a lot of random and rough terrain. You may end up with 10 maps that are incredibly balanced, polished, and carefully engineered. However, they will never fill out a galaxy as much as 50 maps that vary in roughness and terrain.

Don't get me wrong, seeing maps like River City where a battle rages in the far off background, complete with wreckage, smoke, and debris, are pretty awesome. However, that doesn't mean we can't have some unremarkable landscapes with hills, forests, and lakes. Or perhaps some small lone outpost on a glacier. In fact, shouldn't we expect that half the time? It seems realistic and reasonable to me.

Btw, I also agree with crowdsourcing. Whatever it takes to get more maps. In fact, crowdsourcing would probably get both quality and quantity.
