So this is gonna be the first Mechwarrior game i've played since I was 8.
The only thing I know about this game is that we have things called Mechs with BIG guns.
Im seeing all these discussions on houses and clans, merc corps, etc. and I have NO idea what any of this means or how important it is.

Help?
What do i need to know?

There is a free PDF available that will give you a brief history as well as explain the different factions: BattleTech Universe Guide

Hope that helps you make an informed decision! :)

Perhaps this page, specifically:

http://www.sarna.net/wiki/History

The section on the Succession Wars mentions the major players in the Inner Sphere, the Lyrans, the Federated Suns, etc. As I understand it, this game will up to about the beginning of the clan invasion at launch, in 3049

We also started this thread, with enough links to keep you in supply of plenty of reading material, though some are duplicates of things already posted. Happy reading, and welcome to the Sphere! :)

I love sarna as much as the next guy but I'd like to make a friendly suggestion that we link new folks to official sites over fan sites. They tend to be much more professional looking and I think our 25+ year old franchise deserves a polished first impression...

Nope
http://www.lski.org/...Universe%20.pdf

It is quite a bit longer and more in depth, although the CGL one is good too. This one was written just after FASA closed it's doors and the IP moved to WizKids.

I'm glad this game is set in the 3050ish time period cause I am lost after the whole FedCom civil war deal.

No need to read the Role playing stuff as it has nothing to do with hoping in a mech and blowing people up.

All you need to do is learn the Mech chassis.

http://www.brickcomm....com/BC-CBT.htm Has all the mechs ever made at a glance. Weapon readout are irrelevant as they are customizable.

Aside from lore, you also mentioned you haven't played a mechwarrior game in ages. Go to http://www.mektek.net and get mechwarrior 4. It's free and the hands on experience with different mechs and weapons should help clarify a lot of things. For example, the difference between an Ultra AC/5 and LBX AC/10 can be kinds foggy to someone just stepping in. Try things out, see what you like. Hope this helps.
